A Stylebook Online subscriber submitted an Ask the Editor question about the term "rising sophomore" back in 2019. We responded that the "rising" modifier isn't necessary to signify that a student has finished ninth grade and is headed on to 10th grade.

When reporting election returns, AP style says to use figures, with commas every three digits starting at the right and counting left. Also, use the word to (not a hyphen) in separating different totals listed together. apnews.com/hub/elections

AP style calls for capitalizing Senate in all specific references to governmental legislative bodies, regardless of whether the name of the state or nation is used. For example, we would write the U.S. Senate or the Senate.

Going upstate for a summer vacation? Both the AP Stylebook and our primary dictionary, Merriam-Webster, show upstate lowercase and one word, with no hyphen. Merriam-Webster adds that's the case even if upstate is used as an adverb or adjective, such as in "upstate cottage."

Although Merriam-Webster's definition does not give props to Katy Perry, it does show that firework is the singular of fireworks. The plural fireworks is used in phrases like: a display of fireworks. As each singular explosion goes off, you could sing, “Baby, you're a firework!”

AP Stylebook fans love our spiral binding. When you buy an AP Stylebook elsewhere, it will have a traditional paperback binding. We have heard college instructors telling students to take their perfect-bound Stylebook to a print shop, get the binding cut off and pay to have it spiral bound.

AP style shows group stage is two words, no hyphen. Teams in the 2026 World Cup have been assigned to 12 different four-team groups. The top two teams from each group are guaranteed to advance, as will the eight best third-place teams. Teams finishing fourth in groups are eliminated.

We've updated and expanded our artificial intelligence chapter, including adding the noun "compute." In an AI sense, compute means the computing power or resources needed to build, test and improve AI models. With more compute, AI models are said to perform increasingly complex operations.

In addition to speaking at our own session at ACES: The Society for Editing, Stylebook Editor Anna Jo Bratton was a judge for a rowdy spelling bee and Stylebook Product Manager Colleen Newvine helped officiate a game show for copy editors. Anna Jo was even a correct answer in the game show.

Use all caps for call letters and call signs. Use hyphens to separate the type of station from the base call letters: WBZ-AM, WBZ-FM, WBZ-TV.

March Madness is capitalized in all references to the yearly college basketball championships for men and women. Both terms are capitalized in NCAA Tournament, which is acceptable in all references to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's championships.

Capitalize House of Representatives when referring to a specific governmental body, such as the U.S. House of Representatives, the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Capitalize shortened references that delete the words of Representatives: the U.S. House, the Massachusetts House.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the federal holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born Jan. 15, 1929. The holiday is on the third Monday in January. AP style abbreviates Jr. and Sr. and does not precede them by a comma. Martin Luther King Jr. does not take a comma before Jr.
