Most plastic pollution washing up in Seychelles comes from nearby fisheries and shipping lanes. Much probably comes from foreign ships operating within Seychellois waters (such as European fishing fleets). Exciting new study led by Alex Albinski (my first research student!): doi.org/10.1016/j.ma...

🌊Site-specific factors, such as oceanographic conditions, seabird-derived nutrients and daily temperature variability, likely influenced reef recovery, suggesting the need for more localized indicators in the future.

🐟Post-bleaching recovery trajectories (2016–2022) largely aligned with resilience predictions, underscoring the value of this threshold-based approach.

🦀Most reefs were classified as “recover” under international resilience models, highlighting their strong potential for regeneration after climate-related bleaching events.

The study found that in 2015—prior to the 3rd global coral bleaching event—Aldabra’s seaward reefs exhibited resilience characteristics consistent with those of a well-managed, remote marine reserve.

Small step in tech needed to upscale tropical island eradications! Our new paper in Biological Invasions outlines the tech needed to eradicate rats from islands with large areas of mangroves - currently a major barrier for tropical island eradications. The paper is available at: rdcu.be/euJjf

If anyone has any advice on how to get 'official' lecturing experience without a job at a university, I'd be grateful for tips! 🙏
