Writing Eclipse has me convinced I should move away from the darker magical girl story and focus on the trans teenage girl who is also a magical girl, living her life. Writing her friendgroup being total dorks is just so good! Alas, I must kick off the plot.

Ahhh lunch, the best time of day in high school. Where you can sit with your friends and catch up on all the latest gossip. Like, did you know that Trish—the girl that sits up front— has a boyfriend? And he’s a football player? We didn’t believe it until she showed us pictures! They make a cute couple. Or how the rumor going around lately is that Bridget transfered schools and no one knows why; some say her parents saw her kissing a girl and got totally pissed; others are saying she got expelled and that the school’s covering it up.
The best part of this school is that you don’t have to eat in the cafeteria; you can just eat in the classroom. So some girls are on their phones, others like myself have pushed desks together to eat with their friends. I’m eating with Kim, and Brittany, two of my closest friends, and the only ones who know my secret. Brittany’s a more recent addition to the friend group, but she’s cool; totally a lesbian and stuff. She’s a white girl who keeps her auburn hair in a long braid.
“I still don’t get how you balance work and school,” Brittany says. “I mean if it was me, I’d be out there kicking butt all the time!” She also totally has a valley girl accent.
“It’s not that hard,” Kim responds. “I mean it’s hard work, but it’s not like the teachers here don’t understand.”
“Yeah, but don’t you think having—” Brittany whispers, “—magic, would change your entire life?”
“Eh?” Kim shrugs. “I guess? I’m more interested in watching from afar personally. I got passed up for super freaky powers? Thank you whoever decides this!”
“I dunno,” I say, grinning. “You could totally be a magical girl and—”
Kim stops me with a glare. “No. Thank. You.” And then takes a bite of her sandwich. That’s what I’ve always admired about her, she isn’t envious of me having magic. It’s like the least interesting thing about me to her! If anything, I think she envies how close I am with Sammy, cause she totally has a crush.

Little snippet from my rewrite of Eclipse chapter 1. Really fleshing things out, starting it on the right foot.

Late.
I’m late!
I’m so freaking late!
Ughhhh—“Amber!” Mom calls out. “Hurry up dear, I’d rather you girls not be late!”
“I’m coming, Mom!” I yell back, brushing out my strawberry blonde hair. Look, in my defense, I was mediating, and I lost track of time. For once I was up before my alarm, but then I lost myself finding my center. It’s, uh the little things that really keep me going!
Just have to finish brushing my hair out, and then tie it up into a high ponytail, then I’m good to go! Look, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most organized girl in Seaside, and that I am a mess. But I am not usually this bad in the morning’s! Grahhhh, where is it!? Where is it!? I need my choker! I took it off last night before bed, and then… did I leave it—no. Crappp!
Uhh… let’s see, it’s not on my nightstand next to my glasses, not on-top of the dresser, so—oh, hey, wait, yeah, it’s on the vanity; where I left it last night. How do I always do this to myself? No time to figure that out, I’m late! After hurridly adding on my choker, I give myself one final look over in the mirror.
I’m wearing a plaid purple and black school uniform, with a knee-length skirt, and a similarly colored tie that sits loose around my collar. In addition to that, I’ve got on a black leather choker that holds a bright yellow stone in the center of it. Dress code states we’re not allowed to wear chokers, but I guess I’m a rule breaker. It’s a fashion statement and also gender affirming, since it hides my Adam’s apple perfectly.
That’s the big thing, I’m not a cis girl, as much as I’d love if I were; I’m transgender. Which is funny, because Sammy used to always joke about putting me in a skirt, and—“Amber Blaese, get down here, before I come up there an—”
“I. Am. Coming!” I yell back, before Mom can finish calling for me, and pull myself from the mirror. Grabbing my bag and phone, I run out of my room, and down the stairs in a hurry. Next to the stairway, my Mom is waiting, leaning against the ban…

To drive out the Empire, sure, but that was… that was unrealistic. Even with the gains the rebels made, the Empire always responded with a stronger force. The rebels were nothing but an annoying thorn in their side, ultimately. The goal wasn’t even to drive out the Empire, it was to inspire more people to rise up to help drive them out. To get the factories to turn their newly built machines of war against their masters. Hah, whole lot of good that did, eh?
Factory workers never bothered to rebel, not because they feared the repercussions—though, they absolutely did— but because they knew better. They had families to feed, people who depended on them, getting on the Empire’s bad side was a stupid idea.
And to the idiots who did end up rebelling? All inspired by some stupid bitch named Sartha Thrace. Nobody actually knew her, out here they all thought she was some myth made-up to inspire hope. That Ancyor was just some fairytale they tell kids at bedtime. After all, seven hundred and sixty-four kills? There’s no way any pilot lasted that long, right?
Made up or not, that legend spread, and it inspired so many starry eyed fools just like Laila. She saw the pictures, hell, she found video of Sartha, and it was inspiring in how quiet she was. How even when the going got tough, she had this smile on her face that made things seem not as bad.
Imagine the shock when rumors began to spread far and wide that she was dead, that the mighty pilot who took down entire legions on her own, had fallen in battle. What did her in? Some said a sniper, right as she exited the mech, others, a bridge collapse. Nah.

There's something I love about writing Eclipse. It's so genuine; like Amber was given all this power and for so long, it relied on her happiness. And now that she can only feel disgust? She's dysphoric and can't cope with herself.

“No,” I mumble, “no, please. I… yeah, it’s dysphoria. But it’s more than that, it’s everything that’s happened, and I’m not coping well. I haven’t had my hormones in, I don’t know how long, and I’m not good, okay? I’m just not good!”
“Well, hormones, that I can help with.” The way she says that almost, almost gives me hope; I know it’s a lie, though. “As for the other stuff, you wanna talk about it? I mean, can’t hurt, right?” Enil is just a bright ball of sunshine, which might be what I need right now, even if I don’t want it. I hate how much this reminds me of Sammy, during my more dysphoric days.
I take a deep breath to compose myself, trying and failing to muster a smile for Enil. “Where do I start?”
“Anywhere, I guess?” She shrugs, stretching out her legs.
“Okay.” I nod. “You wouldn’t understand, but—” Groaning, I wipe away my tears. “I tried so hard for years to be Amber, and that’s why I was a joy mage! The joy of embracing who I was, it was a feeling like no other!” Shaking, I’m shaking so much already. “And now? I stare at myself in the mirror, I don’t see Amber Blaese, I don’t even see Astrate—you know who I see!? Matthew Blaese, the boy who hated existing, who… who wanted to die, because he despised being a man!”
Thankfully, she doesn’t interrupt or make any move to hug me, choosing to nod along, instead. I just need to spill these feelings before they explode, and I do worse than invoke a Discordant Trance. But she does smile, allowing me to continue.
“I’m… I’m a monster! More wolf than the girl I used to see in the mirror! I mean, fucking look at me! My eyes aren’t even human! I have claws—fucking claws now! And this stupid tail, that—” Fighting back a growl, I desperately try to center myself; spoilers, it doesn’t help, still shaking and on the verge of more tears. “Sorry, I—I’m just not good. I invoked a Discordant Trance and now nothing makes sense anymore! I’m just a monster, and I—I don’t even know if Sammy would recognize me! I don’t even recog…

On one hand, Joyful Heart's Eclipse is a serious story, and then on the other? Well, the outcasts get up some shenangins, including a mute girl who figured out how to recreate her voice using an AI and refuses to be without her technology. This is a fun story to write.

Amaterasu meanwhile is frantically signing, already standing to run out of here, only for Enil to force her back down. “Oh no you don’t, missy. Strict orders from Tsukuyomi, you’re to be kept away from the laptop, because you barely remember to breathe.” I… what?
From her hoodie pocket, Amaterasu pulls out her phone, typing away. “If you would let me go, I could study what this means!” At first I’m left thinking ‘she can talk!?”, because the voice does sound realistic—kind of a mix of Japanese and British, like her sister— but then there’s an artificial tinge to it. “If Astrate-San made a pact with a Dark World creature—”
Enil snatches away the phone, glaring. “You know, if you can devote this much time to recreating your voice, you can spend five minutes disconnected.”
“…So you get service?” I half-heartedly laugh, hoping to defuse what I suspect is about to be a fight.
“No, she does not,” Enil says, stashing the phone in her pocket. “She’s just a tech nerd and figured out how to do stuff like recreate her voice with an AI.”
“Oh,” I say.
Amaterasu furiously signs, giving Enil two middle fingers; yeah, this is gonna be a mess. Probably a good thing the three of us don’t have the resolve to transform, right?
“Yeah, keep it up, and I’ll have Tsukuyomi toss this into the Dark Ocean,” Enil scolds. “Crap, what we were doing? Oh, right. Astrate, you made a pact with a creature of this world. This explains a lot, but… hmm. Yeah, we’ll need to talk to with Tsukuyomi about this later.”

The devil in black leathers, as Handler Iota has described Her as, chuckles coldly, sipping Her tea. “Quite the move you’ve made.” Juniper does not serve Her—not as she once did, but forever more recognizes Her authority. Running from Her did not prevent the inevitable, it was only a matter of time. It could be worse, she supposes. “You’ve learned well.”
Handler Iota sips from Her cup, a smug look written on Her face. “Hey, I learned from the best, didn’t I?” A deep laugh radiates from Her, as she reaches down to pet Juniper’s hair. “Nosa Bion is just another pawn, but she’s at least an interesting one. Worst comes to, well, the kennels will have a new denizen.”
“And yet, there’s more to it, isn’t there?” Handler Epsilon makes Her next move, removing a pawn from the board. Unlike Iota, Epsilon’s face is painted with curiosity. “Every day you prove my judgment in taking you on as my apprentice to be the correct one.” Another sip of tea, Epsilon once more waits in anticipation for the next move.
