![ARE TRANS PEOPLE INTERSEX?
No. Some trans people (like myself) are born with an intersex variation, but transgender people are not inherently intersex. Being transgender refers to your gender identity while being intersex refers to being born with sex characteristics different from the typical male or female.
While there is significant overlap with our experiences, we have our own issues and need our own language to advocate for them. And that is okay!

CAN YOU BECOME INTERSEX?
No. You can't become intersex. This is harmful because it treats intersex as a distinct third sex, when the reality is being intersex is a wide variety of sex traits. There is no one intersex body. This plays into the fetishization of intersex people as an idealized androgynous hermaphrodite. The reality is that intersex people and bodies are not inherently androgynous nor do we necessarily want to be considered as androgynous.
Some individuals want to medically transition in a way that gives them both male and female sex traits to be more androgynous, which is completely fine. Instead of using the word "intersex," you could use "altersex" or "Salamacian." [sic]
