It’s particularly galling to hear someone from the US say something like that, considering the effects our elections have on the rest of the world.

Which, to be clear, is also a progressive position. Opposing masked vigilantism on principle and reporting on what a vigilante is doing as a way of providing even the thinnest shred of accountability is a good idea.

I know this is beside the point of your tweet, but I also take issue with “Modern Trek writing is just not as good”. I think Strange New Worlds has the highest concentration of stand-out phenomenal episodes of any series. And Lower Decks, despite being a comedy series, isn’t far behind.

Seriously? His argument is pretty much “I don’t see gender.”

The middle class is really the subsection of the working class that can afford to go slightly longer without a paycheck.

This is what I love it for. I do not need text editor to format because what I write in there is mine. No one else will ever see it.

I legitimately think “tax cuts for the working class, not billionaires and corporations” could be a winning issue.

It’s almost like inclusivity means different games will do different things and focus on different types of characters.

There are also players who prefer a more characterized protagonist. There might not be a lot of us, but we do exist.

There are two options, the pragmatic one - “art is generative AI free if the creator did not use generative AI and made a good faith effort to avoid LLM-generated creative work” - and the nihilistic one - “there is no such thing as AI-free.” You decide which is more useful to you.

It is worth adding here that Steam and itch's AI disclosures are not going to be an issue for this, either. Every Unity, Unreal and Godot released game would have disclosures on it if the underlying code had to be clean for it. It's not your fault or responsibility.

Really good addition.

That’s a fair point, I could have phrased that a little less facetiously. How about “I hate the way LLMs are encroaching on my life and want to push back, what can I do?” Does that make my intent clearer?

I don’t know what consent looks like because we are so far from a world that values it. I think that, on some level, we must give eachother grace for how we survive in it.

Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Sure, but I think there’s a matter of degree here. Every piece of clothing you buy is complicity in the slave labor involved in its manufacture. Every dollar you pay in taxes is complicity in your government’s military industrial complex and every war crime committed in its name.

If you are using an website, social media, or software, see what you can do to revoke consent for company to collect and use your data for AI training or other purposes. Look this up for anything you use regularly, because a lot of places are trying to sneak it in.

If you have code on GitHub, go into the settings and turn off all of the AI-related options.

If you haven’t already, stop using google search. Switch to a search engine that lets you turn off AI summaries (I use DuckDuckGo, but there are a lot of options).

If data centers are already built, support legislative efforts to make them pay for their own energy and resource usage.

Also, if he’s still subscribed to three different services, I think he should cut back to one. We should all try to limit the amount of money we give to these companies.

I expect him to start disclosing which generative AI services he’s using and for what. I thought his Patreon post was a good example of what an AI disclosure could look like. I want him to put something like that in a public place, such as the GitHub repo or Renpy docs, and update it regularly.

Question 5: If you don’t expect him to stop using AI, what do you expect?
180
Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I’m not going to demand he give up a tool that makes the grunt work for that a little easier any more than I’m going to demand all of you car-owners start making your grocery runs on foot.

Tom has been developing a free tool that allowed many of us to make games for well over a decade. He’s put his personal time and energy into maintaining this tool, and what he makes through Patreon doesn’t come anywhere close to what he could have made by taking a salaried job instead.
1171
Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
I wish he would, but I don’t think that’s a reasonable thing for anyone to demand of him.

Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Question 4: Should we demand Tom stop using generative AI?
180
Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
My point here is hold yourself to reasonable standards. Don’t use AI to make your art. Hell, don’t use AI to write your code. But you aren’t responsible for every choice involved in making your tools. If you can use photoshop and call your work “AI free”, you can use Renpy. Or Godot, Unity, etc.

Also, if you are using a piece of opensource software that allows contributions, I can virtually guarantee you there is some LLM-generated code in it. Any method of enforcing “no AI usage” on a group of volunteer programmers would be horrifically invasive and prohibitively labor-intensive.
1261
Apple Explosion @applesplosion.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
It isn’t possible, in 2026, to have a piece of software untouched by LLM-generated code. If you are using Google products, VSCode, GitHub, or a computer with an operating system that’s had a software update post 2023, you are using LLM generated code in your process.

Also, I do think there is an ethical obligation to disclose exactly when and how you are using generative AI. That disclosure should have happened publicly (not onboarding Patreon) all the way back in 2021, and should be updated regularly as the generative AI usage changes.

Question 3: Can I still call my project “generative AI free” if I used renpy as my game engine? Short answer: yes.
