This doesn't impact my score at all (though it should), but I miss games having cool, quirky manuals that lean into the game's atmosphere and vibe without dumping a ton of exposition-heavy dialogue on the player.

All in all, a fun time to pick up and play, but a nightmare to complete. The game really got me with the final boss getting a 2nd phase! I'm not much of a game reviewer, but I'd give Castlevania 1 a passing grade. A solid 6.5/10. I lowered it only because the genre has improved so much.

I enjoyed what the game wanted to be and can appreciate it for its time in gaming history. BUT as a privileged chirping bird who's been spoiled by modern gaming, this was hard to sink my beak into at first. Awkward controls and a very short range before enemies pop on screen made it frustrating.

Spooky Season is here, and with it came the creepy games of years prior! I thought I'd take this chance to play through Castlevania for the first time, and oh boy... did it take me a couple of sittings to really get into it.
