Symmetry, the beauty, of the Universe uncovered by Emmy Noether [via Quanta Magazine] 🧪⚗️➕✖️⭐ "[She] discovered that #conservation laws aren’t fundamental axioms of the #universe... they emerge from deeper #symmetries." www.quantamagazine.org/how-noethers... #physics #laws #energy #space #time

How Noether’s Theorem Revolutionized Physics | Quanta Magazine
Emmy Noether showed that fundamental physical laws are just a consequence of simple symmetries. A century later, her insights continue to shape physics.

Numerical coincidences for 2025
There seem to be a lot of numerical coincidences bouncing around concerning the new year 2025. For example, it’s a square number: \( 2025 = 45^2 \). The last square year was \(44^2 = 1936\), …

Mathematician, physicist, and computer scientist, the great polymath (omnimath is more like it) John von Neumann was born #OTD in 1903. He considered his quantum mechanics contributions to be most important. To get a sense of the breadth of his work look at his Wikipedia “known for” list. 🧪 ⚛️ 💻 🧮

#Memory. What is it & how does it work? The word is used for both minds & computers. Where else does it fit? What's its role in emergence & #complexity? 🧵🕸️ In the paper below, @gnoli.eu takes an informational approach to this #liminal stage. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10699-022-09883-9

In 1994 when I worked at Kitt Peak National Observatory, @todlauer.bsky.social made an off-hand comment about grape plasma in the microwave. Being an experimental physicist (read as “nerd”) I immediately tried it during night lunch. Who knew it was come to this? 🧪🔭⚛️

Mathematician John Conway was born #OTD in 1937. 🧪 He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton. Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.
