Great first official day back for a postdoc at the University of Zurich! After the nautiloids and coleoids, let's now work on ammonoid phylogeny! 🐙

Apparently, there is a new early #Cambrian #cephalopod. I am still sceptical, because this has been claimed many times before and always turned out to be something else ... www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-… #Palaeontology #science #Nature

Earliest siphuncle-bearing cephalopod from the early Cambrian - Nature
Early Cambrian Eoceras shaanxiense gen. et sp. nov. preserves septa and a segmented tube resembling a primordial siphuncle, extending cephalopod origins and revealing early assembly of chambered shells used for buoyancy regulation.

I compiled a list of 350 #funding opportunities for #postdoctoral research #fellowships: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1J2M… I realized I should share this again after mentioning it to some folks at the #EFP2026

New paper out led by Christian Klug! Vertebrates are not usually my field of expertise, though here I was able to contribute Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and part of the reconstruction of the 3D models. doi.org/10.4202/app.01290.2025 #palaeontology […] [Original post on ecoevo.social]
Fig. 7. The head of the phoebodontiform elasmobranch Phoebodus saidselachus Frey et al., 2019a (B ESEFB-LTM-203), middle Famennian, Upper Devonian, southern Maïder, Anti-Atlas, Morocco. Three-dimensional reconstructions of specimen in posterior (A1), right side (A2), dorsal (A3), left side (A4), anterior (A5), and ventral (A6) views. Note that the nasal capsules, the rostrum and parts of the Meckel’s cartilages are eroded. All renderings are in orthographic view.Fig. 22. Phylogeny based on the emended character matrix from Coates et al. (2017) and Frey et al. (2019a, 2020). Bayesian tip-dating analyses of 230 characters were performed using the fossilized birth–death model. Numbers shown at nodes represent posterior probabilities.Fig. 21. Reconstructions of an adult female and juvenile male of the phoebodontiform elasmobranch Phoebodus saidselachus Frey et al., 2019a, middle Famennian, Upper Devonian, southern Maïder, Anti-Atlas, Morocco. We incorporated the new anatomical details particularly in the proportions and the fin shapes. The juvenile is reconstructed after the holotype.

It's been a while since I posted something for #FossilFriday ! This time I present Ordosoceras sphaeriforme from the #Ordovician of China, an actinoceratid #cephalopod with one of the strangest siphuncles I know. Compare this to modern #Nautilus !
A sectioned and polished fossil of an orthoconic (straight-shelled) cephalopod, accompanied by a label with Chinese letters and "Ordosoceras sphaeriforme Chang".A section of Ordosoceras sphaeriforme, showing convex septa and a central siphuncle with spherical outgrowths, almost resembling a vertebral column.

Awesome new paper by Thomas Clements and co-authors! doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2025.2369 Fun fact: despite the name similarity, I have nothing to do with Pohlsepia or Palaeocadmus pohli 😉 #cephalopods #coleoids #coleoid #octopus #taphonomy #Carboniferous

Here one of my favorite fossil #cephalopods for #FossilFriday: Pentameroceras mirum from the #Silurian of #Gotland! Those narrow slits of the shell were likely where arms or eyes would stick out!
A Pentameroceras mirum fossill with view of the aperture, held by a hand and with a scale bar. The cross section is circular, about 1 cm, and has one long horizontal slit, which is connected to four more slits about 1/4 to the left. Left side is dorsal, right side ventral.A Pentameroceras mirum fossill with view of the right lateral side, held by a hand and with a scale bar. The specimen is about 2 cm long, with the apex on the left missing, and the aperture contracted, so that the fossil is more or less drop shaped (except for the missing tip/apex)

[Original post on mastodon.social]

Always great to see a bit of humour in scientific papers! Indeed, pesky animals can really mess up your stratigraphy ... From: Flower 1952, www.jstor.org/stable/1299958 #Palaeontology #Stratigraphy
"there are only two ways in which these forms could have arrived in the Harding sandstone. They could have been transported by animals, probably Homo sapiens, or they may represent specimens which were silicified, weathered from the Manitou dolomite, and redeposited in the Harding sandstone. The first possibility I am inclined to dismiss as too improbable. I can conceive of some mischievous student throwing such specimens up hill, but it is hardly likely that such a fate could befall two of the five known specimens of the genus Utoceras."
