But yeah even federation ships play fast and loose sometimes but it’s nice to have a baseline set of rules that things work on

Yep! As I said, the rules got a bit looser over time (even federation ships started breaking them) but various alien species build the nacelles into the hull, or go with different geometries

Romulan Warbird, loyal to the original rules, with a massive empty space between the warp nacelles ahead of the main hull.

Cardassian cruiser. The warp drives are incorporated into the hull. Better protected, but less effective as they don’t have as good “vision” of each other.

Jem’Hadar warship, with the warp nacelles put on pylons, similar to a Federation ship.

Vulcan starship with a warp *ring*. As I recall arranging things this way sacrifices maneuverability in warp for reliability and speed.

The rules got loosened and broken over the years but something like Star trek’s rules for the warp nacelles is a good example

The F-18 is a direct evolutionary descendant of the F-5. The F-18 was developed from the YF-17, which was *itself* an iteration on the P-530 design study that was a development of the F-5E. The Super Hornet is the culmination of a VERY long line of iterative improvements on a 50’s design!
