Frustrated academic. Prefer policy to politics. What works > ideology. Eudaimonia > hedonism. Too much Sisu, not enough Hygge.

Apropos of nothing, but how many years did Lord Archer spend on prison for perjury?

It's not so much that taxes should increase, it's that wages should increase. When minimum wage first came in it was roughly 35% of the median wage. Today it is close to 70%. Externalities and second order effects aside, if the ratio had stayed the same then there would be a lot more headroom.

Peg it to 3 times median salary. It won't address everything, but making sure they only get paid more if we do is a good thing.

So increasing it from 0.2% of the property value to 0.5%? A big jump in one year, but still significantly lower than the 1-1.5% that is common in the north.

This is a supply problem and can be addressed by building more houses, but London has run out of space. Under your leadership will the Green party take the difficult decision to build on the greenbelt?

Council tax in the north is 1-1.5% of property value 0.1-0.15% in parts of North London. A huge driver for regional disparity in property values and rent. As PM it would be your job to address this imbalance. Are you prepared to increase council taxes in North London?

For the very rich, it's about rankings rather than wealth. HMRC should publish a top 500 taxpayers list.

Certain things should be fully funded through taxation. No one should be able to opt out.

People will still try to minimise their tax bill even at this level so we should pair it with a gift tax at the same rate. I'd also start at 2% at £20k and then increase by 1% every £10k until we get to the final rate. Make it pointless to even try and dodge it.

Peg it to x hours of minimum wage. Triple lock until it catches up. Signal the peg and therefore signal an end to triple lock to assuage markets. Also politically the link to young workers deals with intergenerational fairness. This has an obvious end point. Odd that it is still a live issue.

Paying for it? Particularly if we all live longer. Pension age might need to creep up, or a basic rate of inheritance tax e.g. 10% from £200k. There's also the broader issue of minimum wage catching up with median wage. Ratio was 1:3 when brought in, now 1:1.5.

I would suggest x=25. Living wage includes things like commute and work clothes so 1FTE would seem high. Comes in at £320 per week at today's rates. Current state pension £240. Assume it catches up by £10 a year and we hit the peg towards the end of the next Parliament.

Been thinking this for a while. Peg it to x hours of living wage. Signal an end to the markets and lock in intergenerational fairness.

Peg it to 25 hours living wage. Triple lock till then. Signals the end some time in the next parliament, and addresses generational fairness.

Banks make money from the rich by borrowing their money, investing their profits, and returning a portion of the profits as interest. The only way a bank can make money from the poor is by encouraging them into debt.

If it is glacial collapse, then something similar would seem inevitable in the Alps or Rockies in the near future. Attitudes are changing, but a visible impact in the West would focus minds.

I think there's something good about having a constituency MP, but we need to try and remove tactical voting to prevent illusory mandates. Multi member constituencies in the Lords would be my preference. 10 Lords per 1m voters. Like Burnham or not, he does have a point about empowering the regions

PR for Local Councils makes sense. We already have 3 Councillors per ward so why not elect via PR for 3 year terms. Supplementary vote works best for MPs to retain local link. Replacing Lords with PR by region also seems sensible. No need for all chambers to have the same system.

IMO, he wins his seat back, just; gets found guilty by the standards committee and has to face another by election before the year is out. He then claims there's an establishment stitch up so doesn't stand, and skips the country before criminal charges are filed. Claims asylum in America.

If they're in UKB there should be before and after blood samples which should allow researchers to identify first wave victims. That and linkage to GP and NHS records should give a big enough sample to work out what's going on.

True, which is why we need big cohort studies with lots of data linkage like UK Biobank. They're going to save lives and improve health outcomes for millions of lives.

Right to ask questions and reflect on what lessons can be learned, but need to factor in what we knew and when we new it. We knew it was killing otherwise healthy adults and overwhelming hospitals. We didn't know how to treat it or what non fatal health effects would be, including on kids.

The history books will record it as one of the key moments in early 21st century history. I suspect far more consequential than the Brexit it led to. Still too soon to know how it all ends

Restore and Tory split will be interesting. It's likely the split will be as expected given the options and constraints of 2nd pref votes. But there might be signs that something else is going on. E.g. Restore are RW and anti Farage. Not a given they would switch to Ref en masse in a tactical FPTP.

SisuBrit @apjm5.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
I would assume the same, but not every second choice would have been Lab/Ref. I'm curious to see revealed second preference as it could be informative of tactical voting in a GE.

SisuBrit @apjm5.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Do they release the breakdown of where the second preference votes went. It would be interesting to see if the rump Tory vote would have gone to Reform as expected, or to Lab to stop Reform, or a third option.

Given the birth rate in the west is now lower than 2, will inheritance narrow the gap along with increased availability of property, or will cost of elder care and increased pension contributions for the children make things worse?

The fact it's electoral suicide in the south just shows how bad things have got. The simpler option is to add a couple of bands on the top and adjust the formula grant to councils. Over 10 years or so we get to the point where a 3 bed semi in Westminster pays the same as a 3 bed semi in Hartlepool.

Interviewers today are generally Paxman or Frost wannabes. Rottweilers going for a gotcha, or exaggerated chuminess to draw out a bit of palace gossip. Kuenssberg is bad at both. Andrew Neill at his best could flip between the two in the same interview. A dying art it appears.

Bruno is the main man at Newcastle. Maybe he needs a rest and 30 games a season is enough for him now. It might be a masterstroke to sign him, but I'm not convinced.

I think there's a role for Lords Emeritus for those forced to retire at 80. No voting rights, but perhaps chairing or contributing to committees as experts. There's a lot of dead wood in the HoL, but many to quietly contribute and it would be a shame to lose their voices.

Disagree slightly. We shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but we shouldn't mythologise either. We're all human and have plenty on both sides of the ledger. Be kind to those who are grieving, but make sure the history books tell the whole story.
