In memory of Chris Horton. APBA fan and replayer. Current replay: the 1964 Dodgers, because no one could believe how bad they looked in the first 1964 replay.

The new oldest living player, and the only other living MLB centenarian, is former Birmingham Black Baron Bill Greason, whose four innings for the 1954 Cardinals made him the Cards' first black pitcher in 1954. Former MVP Bobby Shantz will turn 100 in September. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/...

Pitcher Art Schallock, who in 1951 replaced future Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle on the Yankees' roster and had been the oldest living former major leaguer, has died at age 100.

After back-to-back Ohtani wild pitches allow the tying run to score on the ninth, the Slashers walk it off in extras. Mashers intentionally walked Rogers Hornsby to face George Brett with the winning run on third; Brett ripped a double to end it. McGwire has two grand slams in the series.

We're using the 2021 season, when Ohtani hit 3 of his 46 HR in games he pitched. Ruth in 1919 hit 2 of his 29 while pitching.

Team Batting Average has a combined 126 HR, less than Bonds and A-Rod by themselves; four players are in double digits, led by Mauer at 28. Ohtani and Walter Johnson are both B pitchers with no Z, so a level playing field there. They'll probably both be Ds by the time these lineups are done. /end

As for the series, I expect the team with six .400 hitters to eat the sluggers for lunch, but we'll see. The sluggers do have four .300 hitters, but the highest, Bonds, is 37 points below the lowest average on the BA team (Mauer); Ohtani hit just .257 in 2021, his top HR year as a pitcher. 8/

No relievers, no PH or PR. If there's an injury, we'll call up whoever's next in line; Roger Maris gets first shot if an OF goes down on the slugger team. After some pondering, Ruth's 1919 season makes him the #2 pitcher; he was Boston's #5 starter, and unlike Ohtani, he couldn't DH. 7/

Another question: no Babe Ruth? Ruth pitched 2 games in 1921, when he hit 59 HR. I decided players were only eligible at their primary defensive position. Ruth's highest HR total when pitching more than 2x was 29 in 1919, but a) he was mainly an RF by then and b) that's still less than Ohtani. 6/

The card computer only goes back to 1903, which aced out another would-be batting average starter: 19th-century 2B Ross Barnes. (It would have ruled out Hugh Duffy as well, but his 1894 season is in the Franchise All-Stars set.) 5/

Couple of quick notes, starting with an apology: by rights, six of the starters on Team Batting Average should be Negro League stars (Josh Gibson, Ray Dandridge, Lyman Bostock Sr., Artie Wilson, Charlie Smith, Tetelo Vargas). The card computer I used for cards I don't have doesn't include them. 4/

Agreed. Their stars have mainly been the proverbial strength up the middle, especially CF and catcher. It's just amazing to me that at the position that's usually easiest to fill, the most storied franchise in MLB has only once in 85 years found a 1B with as much long-term production as Wally Pipp.

Tommy Davis broke an ankle and was never the same, but emergency callup Lou Johnson plugged the gap and ended up an unlikely World Series hero. But safe to say the biggest change was going from Drysdale-Ortega-Moeller-75% of Koufax to Koufax-Drysdale-Osteen-Podres and hardly any filler. 13/13

In '65, Koufax, Podres and their repaired elbows returned to the rotation, and the front four made all but 17 starts. To fill the 4th slot, LA traded Howard, McMullen & Ortega to the Senators for Claude Osteen, who went 15-15 but made 40 starts, setting a template for 9 seasons in blue. 11/x
