#OTD in 1776, the Staten Island Peace Conference took place between British Admiral Lord Howe and American delegates Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, & Edward Rutledge. After just three hours, negotiations went nowhere, after Howe refused to recognize American independence, and the war continued.

#OTD in 1784, the UK Parliament ratified the Treaty of Paris, signed the previous September by subjects John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay, which ended the American Revolutionary War. The treaty went into effect the following May.
