Can I get back the music I purchased, or is this a change in stance under which you would like to claim that stealing from me is ok if my purchases happened enough years ago? (2/2)

@itunes Back in the day I purchased a whole lot of dredg albums. I’ve noticed recently that I’m having a harder and harder time playing them. I keep getting popups asking me to subscribe to things, though with a great deal of work I can occasionally dismiss those popups and still listen. (1/2)

Hey Apple, why can’t I play albums I purchased a decade ago with Apple Music? I click on tracks I own and it brings up a full screen ad. I have no way to listen to the music I purchased from you.

Pluribus is literally just ‘reintegration’. The only reason it feels alien is because there didn’t happen to be a ‘severance’ that happened first.

I asked myself ‘what if bitmap textures could be circles instead of squares’. Then I did some math in desmos. With square textures you can easily bi-linearly sample between the pixels you know. In circle land, you additionally have to interpolate between the two ways to pick your local grid basis!

Characters in a story don’t know if they are ‘role playing’. Actors do. There is no legible difference between an author writing a play and a court recorder recording real dialog. We *perceive* a difference only because we consciously perceive whether we are playing a character. (4/4)

It would be a mistake to say that the substrate itself wants anything, beyond how we’ve tuned the probabilities for the types of personalities it is likely to instantiate. Instead it is the particular instantiations that can be said to have preferences! (3/4)

I model the base LLM as the laws of physics… it is the substrate of a universe that can simulate arbitrary humans. The AI assistant is just one potential human being simulated on that substrate. But the substrate itself is capable of simulating the complete gamut of human personalities. (2/4)

Today I learned that “angle of incidence = angle of reflection” is an incomplete representation of what happens when light bounces. Turns out that the *polarization* of the light still refracts! That’s actually foundational for how ‘iridescence’ can be a thing.

Too few people are appreciating this rational design. And in addition to its rationality I also appreciate the aesthetics 🙃

I spent twice the time making AI make an animation as it would have taken me to make it myself. Pretty much entirely because at the time I only had access to a phone, not a laptop. I have absolutely no idea how I’m supposed to feel about this ethically.

Seriously, the mathematicians need to get in on this. I mean… anti-false with 180 degree rotational symmetry? Surely that axiom unilaterally spawns an entire field of study.

The 4 sphere is weird because two orthogonal circles on its surface can create a flat torus, which might as well be Euclidean space aside from its connectivity. So flat 2D Euclidean geometry might be surprisingly comfortable on the surface of the 4-sphere, especially if those dimensions are complex.

Yeah I feel the diaspora too. If it counts, my TI-83 was stolen in middle school and replacing it was financially painful for my parents. They hid it well and I didn’t find out until decades later. They also taught me to apply pathological levels of persistence and creativity to problem solving!

Then I’ll just commiserate! It absolutely sucks when a monolithic system doesn’t match the needs and incentives of the people embedded within it, and I share your hope that it doesn’t stay stuck in that misaligned state for too long.

Pattern block play with octagons! #21CenturyPB #iTeachMath
The main image in the upper left corner shows a radial design created with 21st Century Pattern Blocks. The design begins with six octagons arranged around a central star. Each octagon uses the same block arrangement in the first layer. Surrounding this, a second layer consists of 6 additional octagons, constructed using a different block arrangement. The first two images along the bottom show the two distinct octagons used in the design. The first octagon is made up of 1 blue rhombus, 1 purple hexagon, 2 green triangles, 2 gray darts, and 2 teal kites. The second octagon is made up of 2 purple hexagons, 4 green triangles, and 4 gray darts. The three images on the right show the progression of the design.

Apologies, while I believe in the concept I have no idea to what extent it has been tried in practice in the past decade nor what results have been seen. I shouldn’t be jumping on the opportunity to respond to you as if it’s an opportunity to retroactively affect the education I experienced! 🙃

It mirrors the real world, where during work hours you have access to other peers and mentors that are on your team and want to help you get unstuck to help you be productive. The teacher can meet the needs of individuals, instead of lecturing to the hypothetical average student.

Do problem solving in the classroom, make the homework ‘watching lectures to be prepared for class’, instead of isolated drills solving problems. There are many benefits to this reversal beyond trying to outwit AI cheating.

Yeah being self inverse is weird. But 180 deg and another 180 deg is a self inverse thing, because it rotates you back to not ever having rotated at all.

I think you may have misinterpreted the direction in which I was trying to sway things. My thesis was ‘you don’t have infinite obligation to everyone on the internet, most of your obligation is toward your neighbors, go outside and learn their names’

I meant that moral obligations should not be paralyzed by their seemingly infinite applicability. There’s no excuse here… just an obligation to not fuck over those you have the power to affect! This is an attempt to resolve technology paralyzing us by giving us too many ways to make a difference.
