Tbh it's been so long I can't remember who on the production team of TFA dropped the bomb of the switcheroo, and I can't for the life of me find the original thread because it's buried taglessly in twitter. If I ever work up the courage, I may @ Mary Isenberg (OG TFA script scribe) about it

Anyways, that's why TFA Bumblebee doesn't act like Bumblebee. Because he was originally Hot Rod, and they didn't change the personality when they swapped the two characters.

They still ended up giving Rodimus Prime a short scene later in the series, and, while it's just my personal theory, they must've reused Bumblebee's original design for this guy—just with a color swap.

In early development, because the Bayverse movies were set to release alongside TFA's launch in 2007—in which Bumblebee had a prominent role—they ended up swapping out Hot Rod for Bumblebee, making no changes to the script and only minute changes to what was originally Hot Rod's design.

I saw someone ranting about this a long time ago on Twitter, so I went to verify myself, and now I honestly think that's because this was Bumblebee's original design. TFA Bumblebee was originally scripted and designed to be Hot Rod, as revealed by original early script leaks a while back.

I'm not really into valveplug, but I did get obsessively curious about its origins after a friend got me back into transformers post-highschool. I traced the earliest usage of the terms "valve" and "spike" in the same work to a tfa fic on fanfiction.net dated to 2009. This's burned into my memory
