In the detective stakes am moving on from The Widow Had a Gun (50) - which I admit I bought for the cover, though it wasn't a bad read - to Say Goodbye When I'm Gone (2020) by Stephen J Golds.
Two book covers are shown. The two mentioned in the text.

Well, another short story has gotten out of control and is reaching for the stars. The working title is: The Year of the (pain-in-the) Ass. Prophetic? I'm now up to Notebook 8 and 28,000 words. I gotta make a late New Year's Resolution about these short stories, let me tell ya!
Photo shows a notebook. It is on a counter in a coffee shop. We are looking out through the window at a zebra crossing. A man is sitting out there (drinking coffee, no doubt). A couple of people have just about crossed. Two bikes, stand next to the zebra.

In the detective stakes, just started reading this novel from 1951. The 13th book in a series about photographer Kent Murdock. The prose might be a bit, well, prosaic, but I just love the cover to bits!
The cover of a detective novel called The Widow Had a Gun. The front cover has a blue background and on the right hand side, you have the top half of a woman's head. She has blue eyes, back hair and is wearing a veil.

Snapped yesterday, out at a harbour café in town, multi-tasking. Yes, me, multi-tasking, a rare sight so enjoy it while you can. I'm both reading a best-seller (another rare sight) AND sending a coded message to my better half: You make a difference.
A photo of me in a deckchair at a harbour café. I'm reading a best-seller (Beach Read) and holding up a post-card which reads, in Danish, You make a difference. I'm well wrapped up in a tweed jacket, wearing my old Ray-bans.

Acceptance from Café Lit this morning. Now is a good time to send to them as they don't get too many subs during the holidays and the way they work is that they pick a story a day from those sent to them that day (providing it is up to scratch) and schedule it for publication.
Photo is off a comic panel in which a man jumps from the ladder of a helicopter onto the peak of a mountain. This speech bubble reads; Made it ... - the comic panel is from Return to Romance: The Strange Love Stories of Ogden Whitney (New York Review Comics; 2019), a fun selection of Whitney's stories from the 1959-63.

Pipsi - one half of the book club we got going in the house - is enjoying the spring sunshine so much that he is neglecting our reading, even though two books we got on the go (Evelyn Waugh's Scoop and Carlotta Dale's The Parrots Come Again) both have bird-life in them.

Just unsubscribed from about 7 lit mags today. Nothing personal, just that my inbox has reached the tipping point (I believe the Yanks have diagnosed this condition as inbox overwhelm). It's like every time we writers send off a story, we sign up for emails from the mag, naturally enough.

For my English writer friends, or friends who are resident in England, remember, the BBC Short Story Award is open now but closes soon. Free Entry. Big prizes! Last time I entered (some years back), I was long-listed. Though, that story simply cannot find a publisher!

Reading some funny old Romance comics from 59-63. Written and drawn by Ogden Whitney. They are the last thing I read at night, after a spot of Zen.
Comic book panel. Text reads: And even when they passed each other in the corridors ...

We see a young man and woman passing one another in the corridor. Both looking away from one another. Both with noses turned up in the air. Both saying; Hmfff!

Yes, it is all happening in Denmark. Well, I've done my editing work for the day, so now it is off to my writing café where I hope to write the end scene for a short story that spiraled out of control (when do they not!). I'll be off the social media, thank goodness!
Headline from The Investigative: Denmark Buys US Hellfire Missiles to Defend Greenland from the United States.Exterior shot of my usual 'writing' café with a lot of bikes parked out front and snow round about the place.

The weather forecast is for snow drifts. I'm gonna get myself well-upholstered and get out there and head for my writing café. Yes, life is pain, but if I can make it to the café it is also pain au chocolat.
Graffiti on a white wall. In black, someone has written in block capitals: LIFE IS PAIN. Next to it, scrawled in blue, is: au chocolat. So, the whole reads: Life is pain au chocolat.

Some much-needed sunshine down at the old writing café today. Managed to plot my way to a quicker ending of the missing persons story I'm currently engaged in. Hope my Bluesky writer pals are getting the words down.
Photo shows a couple of things. The 'table' I'm sitting at, with pen, notebook, coffee cup, highlighter and plants pot in the foreground. And in the background, the view through the window, cars, cyclists, parked cycles. Trees. The road, traffic lights, some wooden structure over the road.

Been watching Excorcismo/Excorcism (Sp. 75. Juan Bosch). Quite entertaining mix of giallo and Excorcist rip-off with Paul Naschy as the priest. Set in an unconvincing England. Even the road sign to Brighton looks well dodgy. Recommended for those of you who like this kind of thing.
Photo shows DVD cover of the German version of the film. We see the young woman who is possessed and the priest who is going to try to save her soul.

It was a pretty long walk today down by the frozen lakes to a café I write in once a month! Boy, did I deserve my cup of coffee even before I'd written a single word. Hope my writer pals got some words down today.

Just got back from the opening film in the Silent Film Festival playing in town at the Cinematek. A restoration of Song/Show Life/Dirty Money (GB-G. 28. Richard Eichberg). Introduction by three people, inc. the restorer himself.
Photo is a German poster of the film, showing the two main starts, Anna May Wong and Heinrich George. Brown and yellow colours make up most of the poster, with red for the titles and orange and a navy blue for Anna's skirt.

First film of the New Year is by Werner Herzog (WG. 70):
The film concerns some dwarfs and midgets (what today we'd call little people) who get up to a lot of trouble. The poster shows one of these little people on a motorbike.

Quick shot of me LITERALLY coming into the New Year yesterday (ignore the date, the camera has a life of its own). Hope all my Bluesky pals made it. Good to see so many posts about literature (and film) in my feed today. Seems like all I got last year was politics here on Bluesky.
Photo of me coming into my apartment through some French windows. It's black night out there. I'm in a tweed jacket with my collar seriously turned up as it was also damn cold out there. I'm carrying some glasses, no doubt protective, as there were also fireworks out there.

Well, November finally came down hard on my writing café. You can just make out a cyclist whizzing by if you look carefully. Maybe I should get off the crime and write a ghost story!
Photo shows the café I tend to write in during the non-summer months. Besides my notebook, pen, highlighter, a novella and a cup of coffee, you can see out of the window into the street. Or rather, it is v. difficult to do so as it looks very foggy out there.

Been re-watching The Shooting (US. 66. Monte Hellman). This one stars Jack Nicholson as a bounty hunter. He plays the role quite well. However, the film properly belongs to Warren Oates who is hired to track a man down, and Millie Perkins as the woman who is doing the hiring .
Photo shows Criterion BluRay cover. Bit of a montage. A fragment of Jack Nicholson's face in there.

Well, somebody's got to read the bugger. Actually took 3 photos and could not get the book in focus, talk of symbolism! I've just fought my way through the frame story, which is a little head-twisting. Now, I'm about to embark on the main story, let's hope that is plain sailing.

Finished a first read-through/edit of a detective novel I finished writing two years back. Needs a hell of a lot of work on it, but there are around 380 pages so I can throw a lot out and still keep it at novel-length. Hope my writer friends are getting the words down.
Photo shows Eclipses luminarium by Cyprian Leowitz, 1555. Collection Bavarian state library. Basically, you have the face of the sun during an eclipse. It's a bit hard to explain really. You'll need to ask somebody to sit down next to you and tell you what is going on.

We had some good weather today so I ended up writing in a cafe on the lakes here in Copenhagen. To the left, the inner city. To the right, the neighbourhoods. Hope my Twitter writer pals got some work done today.
Photo shows a table in an outdoor cafe located on a lake. Well, the cafe is both indoor and outdoor, but I'm sitting outdoors because we have a blue sky and the temp is up at around 15 or 16 degrees C, with very little wind. You see the lake in front of me, a couple of boats moored to the kind of pier that I'm on. On the table is my notebook, my pen, a bottle of carbonated water, a glass and my sunglasses.

In the lit stakes, I'm currently reading: The Lost Musicians (50). Heinesen was a Faroese writer who wrote in Danish. However, I'm not reading this in Danish, but in an English translation. Plot concerns some musicians up on the islands at the beg. of the twentieth century.

Been watching Mother Joan of the Angels (Poland. 61. Jerzy Kawalerowicz). Excellent film about the possession of a group of nuns at Loudun. Beautifully shot. The film centres around a theologian's attempt to cure the Mother Superior of her possession by eight demons.
