Last night I was returning from the middle of Ashford (Kent) to my hotel as the light started to fade. I have hurt my foot so at that point I was slightly limping along a very quiet footpath, a fit young black man came striding the other way and we passed under a big yew tree.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social Come on Rory! You can't get away with saying Burnham’s move on #Brexit won't please people after #BestForBritain did such a comprehensive MRP showing overwhelming support to #RejoinEU. Only four constituencies in the whole country were contrary.

Finally! The press has caught on that it's 'Silly Season' and started trivially bitching about uber-rich celebs moving house. Climate change, food security, right wing corruption, an erratic senile paedophile rapist president, wars of aggression and grossly irresponsible media can't lead every day!

Looking forward to listening to the latest episode of @therestpolitics.bsky.social in which "Alastair is (apparently) joined by Andy Burnham’s closets [sic] confident [sic], friend and former colleague". I guess having "closets confident" friends helps explain Burnham’s style choices.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social 559 on Cueta with Gerald Knaus was another stimulating episode. I was disappointed that the idea of returning irregular migrants to a safe country they departed from was treated superficially despite being a central plank of Gerald's solution.

What is "a scientist" anyway? Many have scientific training and a thorough grasp of scientific method without being employed to use it. Science is a methodology, not a job.

Can US politicos please clarify any subtle differences in how "Rep" is written when it seems to mean both "Representative" and "Republican"? If you have to know a person's details to disambiguate then it all gets a bit exclusive and uncommunicative. #USPolitics

@therestpolitics.bsky.social Water used by data centres doesn't vanish so "consuming" water is largely a misdescription. So, it's basically simple, require every data centre development to return 90% (or more if reasonable) of the water to the supply in the condition it arrived.

Seems to me that a very significant problem with data centres driven by AI is that we are in a race between multiple companies each preparing complete infrastructure in anticipation of dominating the sector. Once the sector stabilises there will be massive oversupply.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social Rory's repetition of "Trapped" is emotive nonsense. At most all any form of tax reform proposed in this "Leading" episode introduces is a new factor in making any decision, more often it's just a tweak in the outcome of the financial calculation. There's no trap.

So, there is a precedent for vetoing an MP's resignation Viscount Chelsea (Henry Cadogan) applied for the Chiltern Hundreds in 1842 The Chancellor (Goulburn) refused because, get this, Cadogan wanted to resign to obstruct an investigation for bribery h/t @fascinatorfun.bsky.social and @gazhay.com
Screenshot from the linked article, with the following text highlighted

"The noble Lord had stated, that it was unusual to refuse the Chiltern Hundreds, except on account of mental incapacity, or where proceedings were pending for the expulsion of the applicants from their seats. In this case, however, the House had decided that compromises had been entered into, which had the effect of obstructing the investigation of bribery; "

Just requested a refund from @eonuk.bsky.social. They recalculate your direct debit at the same time & tell you whether it'll rise or fall so (with repeated tries) it's possible to find the refund that leaves it unchanged. It's baffling that the default options they present omit that amount.

Greatly disappointed that the deposit rules for British elections are based on a proportion of the valid votes cast, not a proportion of the electorate. What a missed opportunity for #Clacton to recover an honourable reputation even if #Farage wins this pantomime unopposed.

A suggestion for the #RoyalMail to catch up with email, SMS, phone calls, social media and just about any modern means of communication... Let people define block lists of senders whose mail is automatically returned by the sorting office. Costly to develop, I acknowledge, but *so* useful.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social If data centres are so very vital for the future then they are worth the much greater investment of mitigating their harms. The problem is more about government failing to impose the right rules on the companies developing them than any negative impact they have.

@therestpolitics.bsky.social Rory's leap from 'AI data centres need a lot of power' to 'Ed Milliband is a blocker to UK sovereignty & growth' and 'Net Zero is damaging' is extraordinary. The bottom line is that Net Zero is *essential* to minimise the catastrophic social impact of climate change.

Unlikely, there's much less lactose than protein in cheese. Someone who particularly reacts to cheese rather than milk is far more likely to have an allergy. Cheese made with A2/A2 cow's milk may alleviate symptoms (it's less allergenic), sheep's & goat's cheese too (or plant based alternatives).
