Another long-standing #HacKit UI itch scratched. The Appearance pane used to hide its colour choices inside a pop-up button. Now the whole palette is visible as coloured radio buttons, easier to scan and one click to change. Coming in the next major update. #Cocoa #AppKit #Swift #MacDev #macOSDev

One feature I’ve wanted to add to #HacKit for years is finally done. The next major update introduces the Find Bar, so finding text in stories works just as you expect. Getting #NSTextFinder working outside of NSTextView was a challenge, but I’m delighted with the result. #AppKit #Cocoa #Swift

Core Data question. Need to persist an arbitrary [Int] from a remote API. Never queried, only stored, updated and retrieved. Must work with NSPersistentCloudKitContainer. Would you use: • String ("1,2,3,4") • Transformable • Binary Data (Data) • or something else? #Swift #CoreData #CloudKit

#Oliphaunt is now available on the App Store! It’s a #Mastodon client built specifically for #Mac using #AppKit with some #SwiftUI. The goal was to make a well-behaved Mac application that follows the platform’s design language and adopts #macOS idioms. App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id674552...
macOS desktop showing the Oliphaunt Mastodon client in light mode. Multiple app windows are arranged across the screen: a timeline window with a sidebar of Mastodon sections, a media viewer displaying a large photo of an orange and black bird, a conversation thread window and a composer window for writing a post. The macOS menu bar and Dock are visible with colourful system wallpaper in the background.

#StoreKit 2: has anyone seen Transaction.updates or Product.SubscriptionInfo.Status.updates stop emitting after the first purchase? In my app the initial transaction is observed (user-initiated or via #Xcode Transaction Manager) but subscription renewals and later transactions never arrive. #Swift

Today marks HacKit’s 5th anniversary. My first macOS app published on Friday 22nd January 2021. It is a #HackerNews reader written in #Swift using #AppKit with no #SwiftUI. The name HacKit is a portmanteau of Hacker News and AppKit.
Screenshot of the HacKit macOS app running on a Mac desktop. The app shows a three-pane layout with a sidebar of Hacker News categories on the left, a list of top stories in the centre and the selected story with comments on the right. The interface uses a light theme with orange highlights. The macOS menu bar and Dock are visible, indicating the app is active on the desktop.

I got my #Digg invite code a few days ago but only got around to registering today. Did anyone else get theirs yet, or even know Digg’s making a comeback?

Questions about #StoreKit 2 for #Mac apps: Do I really need a server to verify and validate receipts? From what I understand, this can be done locally on-device, but that may be susceptible to tampering. #Swift #StoreKit2 #AppStore

What’s the best #analytics solution for #Mac apps? iOS is spoilt for choice, but many of those options don’t support #macOS. So far, I only know of #TelemetryDeck and #Firebase (Google Analytics) that work on the Mac. Are there others worth looking into?

FB19637573 Adding a Touch Bar to a View Controller renders the entire storyboard black. Hiding it reverts the storyboard to normal and clicking on it renders the entire storyboard black. #Xcode #Storyboard #FeedbackAssistant #Mac #AppKit #Cocoa

#Oliphaunt is now available on #TestFlight. You can try the macOS Mastodon client here: testflight.apple.com/join/Epq1P3Cw Please note it’s a work-in-progress. I’d appreciate any feedback — feel free to share your thoughts here: github.com/anosidium/Ol... #Cocoa #AppKit #Swift #macOS #MacDev
Screenshot of a macOS desktop showing an app named “Oliphaunt,” a Mastodon client. The main window displays the “Trending” feed, including posts (toots) from users. On the left sidebar are navigation items like Home, Notifications, Trending, Live Feeds and Direct Messages. Two remote instances, mastodon.social and mastodon.online, are listed at the top. On the right, a separate window shows the compose view for a new toot by a user named John Appleseed, with placeholder text in the editor. The app runs on macOS with a Sequoia-style wallpaper and dock icons visible at the bottom. The menu bar shows it is Thursday, 8 May at 4:59 pm.

Another small detail I’ve implemented in #Oliphaunt: the Lists timeline now synchronises with the sidebar’s Lists group. Quite pleased with the smooth animation — it’s those subtle touches that make the difference. #Cocoa #AppKit #Swift #macOS #MacDev

A small detail I implemented in the #Oliphaunt sidebars is synchronised animations when using drag and drop. I’m quite pleased with how it turns out! #Cocoa #AppKit #Swift

Four years ago today, on Friday, 22nd January 2021, I launched my first Mac app, #HacKit! It began as a simple Hacker News reader where you could browse stories, dive into comments and perform basic searches.

Three years ago on this day, I published my first Mac app, HacKit. It’s a Hacker News reader and the name is a portmanteau of Hacker News and AppKit. It’s a pure Cocoa app written in Swift with no SwiftUI integration.

I’ve been working on a new macOS app, it’s a Mastodon client! The client is made specifically for the Mac, conforming to the design language very seriously. I aim to make it a true Mac app with platform-specific features. Here is a screenshot, what do you think?

So I have been working on a new Mac app for a while and now I am looking for a designer who knows how to design a Mac app icon. Any designers interested? Or does anybody have any recommendations?
