idc if it's trite. i caught a glimpse of myself in this girl's letter from 30 years ago. we're all fictions
As she told me in one letter, "The only people i can connect with usually live miles away but that is okay. (They are so important to me) No one seems to be real around here and the only thing that is, is those letters I get." Cleo's feelings about what counts as "real" call into question the lines between lived experience, accounts of it, and fictions. Ironically, it appears to be her partly fictional persona that has enabled her to finally "meet" "real" people.

please forgive me for hooting and hollering but i think i would like to read this. whats that quote about god making grapes but not wine? (making a note for myself here. Benice L Hausman, Changing Sex: Transexualism, Technology, and the Idea of Gender (1995))
Drawing extensively on autobiographical accounts of gender reassignment, Hausman attempts to examine the contradictory ways in which transsexuals are both forced to "proven their "real" or "authentic" gender and yet contest the very existence of "real" or "authentic" gender identity. She argues "The commonsense understanding of transsexualism as a 'disorder of gender identity' is a cover-up for the potentially more threatening idea that transsexuals are subjects who choose to engineer themselves." For example, Bornstein has written, "I am a transsexual by choice, not by pathology."

oh.............. that's ai. ai corpos want ai to be a prescriptive tech soooo bad but they're marketing it as holistic. badly.
an excerpt from "Cyborg grrrls: new technologies, identities, and community in the production of 'zines" (1996) by Kate Eichhorn:
In The Real World of Technology, Franklin emphasizes the need to understand technologies as both historically and socially contingent, and thus, emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between "holistic" and "prescriptive" technologies. She argues that holistic technologies can be understood as those technologies which "leave the doer in total control of the process" while with prescriptive technologies "Each step is carried out by a separate worker, or group of workers, who need to be familiar only with the skills of that one step." In short, holistic technologies enable performing
the people using technologies to also make decisions about how and when to use any given technology. On the other hand, prescriptive
technologies work to limit such decision making. In fact, Franklin
argues that with prescriptive technologies the less capable workers
are of making decisions about when and how to use the technologies
the more efficiently these technologies tend to work. Prescriptive
technologies - and she argues that "Today's real world of technology
is characterized by the dominance of prescriptive technologies" -
are largely dependent on a "culture of compliance."

im reading some stuff from Kate Eichhorn and she makes an excellent point here: the approach to any technology is going to be noticeably split between academic and personal use. (academic use itself being a pipeline for industrial / "job" use) the former is far more visible, but less interesting.
an excerpt from "Cyborg grrrls: new technologies, identities, and community in the production of 'zines" (1996) by Kate Eichhorn:
For example, studies on gender and technology typically take place within the school system and tend to focus on whether or why girls and young women are under-represented in science and computer related courses, why they are more likely to drop out of science and computer related courses and/or programs, or how they "cope" in these traditionally male-dominated fields of study. In other words, these studies have typically focused on "victims" and
"failures."

that's quite a comparison. but i mean... tru tho. sure
an excerpt from "Panic computing: The viral metaphor and
computer technology" (Deborah Lupton, 1994), which reads as follows:
'Panic Computing' invokes '[t]he underlying moral imperative ... You can't trust your best friend's software any more than you can trust his or her bodily fluids - safe software or no software at all!' (Ross, 1991: 108). The insertion of an 'infected' disk, that is a 'carrier' of corruption, spells disaster for the integrity of the computer corpus. Just as people are exhorted to grill their sexual partners for details of their past intimate lives, so as to be 'sure and safe' before proceeding to exchange bodily fluids, so they are warned to verify the source and safety of the computer disks they insert into their PCs.

this is what im talking about. from 1993! we are facets
Anthropological accounts of ritual often focus on the body as the zone of inscription for ritual activity. The authentic, subjective, and singular self is located within the physical body, and an externalised, public, collective self is inscribed on the body as the "social skin" (Turner 1980; Douglas 1966). In Farside, by contrast, the physical body becomes an incidental referent in the construction of multiple selves; it is "forgotten" -- systematically deconstructed through the fusing of the hacker body with electronically constructed selves. The person becomes a network of related but disparate personalities, only some of which are located within the physical skin.
In conversations with MUDders, I often encountered an idealization of the virtual persona as more authentic than the selves bounded by the physical body. A lord of Farside once told me: "My physical appearance isn't good. But here I am my personality. People meet it before they meet the physical me" (Farside 3/2/93). The "physical me" is contrasted with "it," "my personality." This consciousness of identity is profoundly pluralistic; multiple selves construct the identity of the person.

i actually realized that if i just replace the operator with a saw wave instead off a triangle or saw wave, then you get the "position modulation" waveform i was hypothesizing. it looks like this. (same as -1 oct square wave FM, and -1 oct triangle PM)
a really jagged waveform

well that's just not correct. but it's really close. if i saw that in a youtube video i'd sigh and think "this guy needs another research pass" but within the context of a 2002 magazine, that slight misinfo tickles my brain in a certain way. very curious
text from Hyper magazine issue 107 that reads: "Yet the Super Mario theme, for all its brilliance, was composed and played with hardware insanely primitive by today’s standards. The sound chip for the NES was about as simplistic as they come: it could produce one noise, one sine and two pulse-wave voices,"

do Mike Mulkay, Nancy K. Baym, et al realize that their academic papers about humor are themselves incredibly funny? this phrasing is killing me
an excerpt of text from "The Performance of Humor in Computer-Mediated Communication" by Nancy K. Baym that is citing "On Humor: Its Nature and Its Place in Modern Society" by Mike Mulkay, which reads as follows:
Furthermore, humor cues can be incorporated within the humor itself. Mulkay argues that an interpretive reversal may be cue enough to "generate the terminal response required by humor -- namely laughs and smiles" (1988, p. 54)

but also this excerpt goes hard: Gender becomes a verb. again, from 1997.
an excerpt from Shannon McRae's 1997 essay "Flesh Made Word: Sex, Text, and The Virtual Body" which reads as follows:
If boys can be girls and straights can be queers and dykes can be fags and two lesbian lovers can turn out to both be men in real life, then "straight" or "queer," "male" or "female" become unreliable as markers of identity.
It is not so much that gender roles or sexual preferences actually change as that cross-gender role play troubles the link between gender and desire, from which we, usually unquestioningly, construct our identities as sexual beings.
Gender becomes a verb, not a noun, a position to occupy rather than a fixed role.
In many cases, gender becomes the effect that one individual can have upon another.
