Aliens (1986)

Alien is about the way progress hardens people and turns them into mechanical monsters- and about how that fragile human heart will save you as much as it will betray you. No matter how far we go, we will be made with the same flaws- and those flaws might just be the thing that keeps us human.

But do not be hardened by this fact. For remember- Ripley is not some heartless bitch, she is a captain, and a captain who’s not willing to leave a man behind. And this ends up saving her- as Jonesy is what tips her off to the alien being on the escape craft in the first place.

Hey, at least the future isn't very racist or sexist. At least in Alien 1979

Numerous people die by partaking in sensation and human emotion- A dinner that turns into a bloodbath. A momentary lapse of judgement caused by caring about an animal gets you killed.. Having mercy for a comrade ends up getting you both killed.

Ripley, as a character, is chastised by her crew for not valuing the life of another crew member when she refuses to break quarantine- a calculated choice that she defends by saying the captain would had done the same in her position.

To simplify, the Alien is truly the face of the setting. Cold, uncaring, and brutalist, where the divides between man and machine have disintegrated.

(I wish Ridley Scott would stop giving a fuck about the space jockey, but in this film it does serve a purpose- we have to accept that whatever the alien is, it evolved to take advantage of interplanatary travel in other living beings- which means man is not alone in space. Terrifying to ponder.)

But it is also thoroughly anti-biological, as this supreme hunter of the kind of living being who could become a space faring being.

Then, it’s mechanical nature steps in. The chrome teeth. The distinct, planned evolution. The ferocity of indifference beyond it’s own personal coding. The alien is fascinating as a creature because it is a thoroughly anti-mechanical being, more akin to a roach caught inside of a computer case.

It’s both a fleshy, living thing made of the softest, most uncomfortable things imaginable- Vaginas and Penises and folds and layers and ridges, a map of human insecurities, of flesh stuck to bone.

What’s striking about this ferocious beast is that it is, first of all, designed to be a horrific fusion of the deeply biological and the uncaringly mechanical. Bishop expresses it as a pinnacle of evolution and deeply admires it.

All of what I’ve just talked about are things readily apparent about the setting of Alien before we see even a single second of “The Alien”- as at this time, the term xenomorph was not coined.

Cassette Futurism sees comfort as a design take second to bulky functionality. The Nostromo is a company ship, designed to be reused. It is sparse and unceremonial. The humans inside are simply just a part of the machine- a diode, to be replaced when it dies.

No plush looking spacesuits, no toylike rayguns, no Hajame Sorayama bots, just cold, crunchy machines and spaces not designed with human comfort in mind.

The nature of Alien’s blind casting end up working both as a vision of the future as a more equal place (at least, in Alien) and a bitter pill of the things holding us back. There’s a futurist angle in Alien that lets it be the strong sci-fi it is along with the horror ripping it back to reality.

At no point does the film obviously nod towards it’s feminist principles. Ripley is simply treated as an equal in every engagement, beyond calls for the chain of command on the ship. Which Ripley (as her fatal flaw, that nearly gets her killed by Ash) follows diligently, to prove a point.
100
ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
I need you to ponder this. A major plot point in Alien is Ripley, as a person, confronting an older male character for disobeying the chain of command- and the tone of the conversation is “It’s highly unusual that you did this, to the point of paranoia about your motivations.”
Ripley: "Ash, when Dallas and Kane are off the ship..."Ripley: "I'm senior officer""You also forgot the science division's..."
"... basic quarantine law

She is treated as a chief mate and second in command first, then a crewmember second. At no point in this association is she a “woman”, with all the gendered expectations and stereotypes pre-loaded.
100
ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
At no point in Alien does it “feel” like Ripley’s status as a woman (despite the film having a strong maternity theme- the head computer is called “mother”, and ultimately the most obvious choices in the film are blocked by her decisions) is part of her characterization.
100
ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
Which then brings us to talk about Ripley, the character, rather than Ripley, the woman. For those who don’t know, Ripley was written as a unisex role. All of the characters were. Which informs some interesting things about her performance in juxtaposition to the writing.

Alien reflects this dark future of interplanatry travel being beset by the incompetence of normal people and corporate actors working in the shadows. These people are largely robbed of true independence, forced to lobby with MOTHER, their onboard computer system owned by Weyland Yutani
Mother, in 1979's Alien.

ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
By comparison, the detached and lazy Dallas shows a man promoted for his willingness to obey the corporation at large, and the charismatic but ultimately manipulative Ash shows a man who’s compromised by his own binding to procedure.
100
ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
Ripley’s characterization as a sober, rational intelligent person who values procedure even while acknowledging her human feelings is what makes her such an interesting person on the Nostromo.

Which says things about the nature of space travel and traversal in it’s vision of the future. Which says things about the nature of the alien in the first place, as a being designed to prey on this nature. Which says things about the human capacities of it’s characters as their ultimate weakness.

ANoN @anonameis.bsky.social · 1m
Alien is amazingly written because the plot revolves around Ripley as a an individual rather than a woman, who has adapted to thrive in this environment... Which says things about our modern relationship to gender...

Writing about the movies I saw this October so far.
Write up of The Birds
Thoughts: I’ve seen Hitchcock’s The Birds once before, while I was just a little sporemold in the damp basement of a college, but at that time, My appreciation was deadlocked on the writing. Now, as a more solidly assembled slimeball, I can appreciate the film wholeheartedly. For one, Hitchcock’s misogyny ends up feeling indirectly empowering in The Birds (compared to Strangers On A Train, which I’ve previously described as “An icepick perfectly designed to hit the source of fear of the 1960s man “). Melanie is a savvy, sassy woman with composure, and the lengths of her prank is enjoyable within itself. The film should also be complemented for its pacing- It ambles in places, but it truly feels like a seaside trip that’s ruined by a gang of seagulls dive-bombing your picnic. Overall, obviously recommended.

I feel like most psychic characters in fiction come across as divine in their ability to understand human behavior, when it's strictly more confusing to hear someone think one thing and do the complete opposite and not notice the conflict within themselves.

Jose's struggles in PARANOiDS story rely on him learning about the way thoughts don't represent beliefs as closely as he thinks, and working through the extreme, world-weary guilt he feels about just how much hate he senses in the world around him.

I've been working on critical analysis videos and essays for years, and it sometimes shocks me that most criticism doesn't seem to go out of its way to assume good intent on the creative decisions of artists.
