Oblivion
It comes back to me in bits and pieces sometimes.
Like shreds of a dream, forgotten but lurking just underneath the surface.

The deep black pools of oblivion call out to me.
“Just a little closer, don’t be afraid, we only want to drown you; you’ll choke on delight, submerged in every feasable pleasure.”
“You know you want to. We’ll never stop taunting you.”

“Cried out to you as a child, you heard our pleas; wanted to be just like me.”
“We had you in our grasp once and we haven’t let go. One day you’ll come crawling back, you’ll go barking mad--begging for more.”
“Don’t say we didn’t tell you so.”

Bemused whisper got a taste, brewing up another batch, it’ll sit here until you crave escape.
Waiting, waiting until your last of days.

I don’t wanna be anyone else but me.
Despite what you say there’s nothing wrong with the way I am.
Who cares if you don’t understand.

Can’t undo the pains of the past.
And I wouldn’t if I could, even though I’ve spent many nights wishing otherwise.

Balance, an angel told me.
Adjust the scales, everything will fall into place.
Trust that the missing pieces will make themselves known.
Already so far you’ve come.
You’re not one to settle no matter how much you try.

The Game that Everybody Hates
Were things better or did we just not know better?
The ignorance of childhood.
The cruel innocence that came with it.
Unminced words, frank observations, I was often accused of being rude.
We sat in a circle and you taught us honesty is the best policy.
Turns out all adults do is lie.

There were so many things that went over my head.
I think it takes longer for me to catch up.
When did everyone else learn this stuff?
Shame taught me better than you ever did.
I think twice about opening my mouth.
Took me a long time to figure out we’re playing a big game of pretend–and it’s not even fun.
Everybody hates this game.

I became too good at it.
So many veiled victories piled up that I forgot myself.
Who am I under these masks?
Guess we'll never find out.

Just finished A Deadly Education, it was a fun read even though YA is usually not my cup of tea. I'm a massive fan of the His Majesty's Dragon series so I wanted to check out Novik's other works. Will definitely be reading the sequel! #booksky #books #reading #bookrec #writingcommunity #fantasy

I’m usually not one for YA fantasy romances, but I had to give Novik’s book a chance. It was surprisingly enjoyable and an easy read. I did struggle a bit at first with the “edginess” of the plot and the MC’s powers of doom, but Novik’s writing pulled me in and it didn’t take long for me to get sold on the world she had created.

I especially enjoyed the relationship between El and Orion. It felt different from the typical romantacy tropes, although this book is definitely more fantasy and less romance.
