Mathematicians like to know if a statement is ‘sometimes, always or never true’. Let’s find out, by generalising the formula. I’d say that your intuition is correct, and that taking the average will always work. Thank you for sharing your thinking 🙂

You could also set the workings out like this:

You could use simultaneous equations to find the length of the journey. A slightly different problem below. I wonder if ChatGPT will still need to deduce the time difference first 🤔
Imagine you go on a fictitious international train journey between the UK and Country X. Assume there is only one station in each country.

Monday: UK → Country X

Departs: 10:30am (UK time)
Arrives: 4:30pm (Country X time)

Monday: Country X → UK

Departs: 4:30pm (Country X time)
Arrives: 6:30pm (UK time)

The time difference between the UK and Country X is always the same. The journey takes the same amount of time in both directions.

How long is the journey?

The word of the day is Parametricism
One of the most famous buildings linked to parametricism is the Heydar Aliyev Center (shown in this photo).

Parametricism is a style of architecture that results from using parametric design tools to create a building.

This year, I read my first graphic biography (Muybridge by Guy Delisle) and absolutely loved it. Maybe the right author can take us on a journey where each image delivers a clear, bite-sized idea, without the message getting lost in noise? Not unlike a good maths teacher, really.

This is a maths 🆘 Please send help! In the grid, we can see exactly one multiple of 5 in each column. If I generalise the grid method for a coprime positive integer pair a and b with a<b we will have a columns and b rows. How do I prove that there is only one multiple of b in each column?
Using the @howiehua.bsky.social grid method to calculate the Frobenius number of 3 and 5.

An opportunity to use a ‘zero pair’ in A-Level maths @studymaths.bsky.social Lookey-likey question from @catrionaagg.bsky.social
We are given the maths question ‘Integrate the fraction with a numerator of x and denominator of x+4 with respect to x’

The numerator x is rewritten as x + 4 - 4, by introducing a zero pair +4 - 4.

There is one bottle of wine in each region of the Venn diagram. Each prisoner drinks from 4 bottles of wine, as shown. If no-one dies, bottle A must be poisoned. If everyone dies, bottle H must be poisoned. If only prisoners 1 and 2 die, bottle G must be poisoned. etc…
The solution to the Poisoned Wine Puzzle can be modelled using a Venn Diagram with 3 circles. This Venn Diagram has 8 regions with exactly one bottle in each region. Each prisoner will drink from 4 bottles of wine. If we know which prisoners die, we can identify the specific region of the Venn diagram and hence we know which bottle of wine is poisoned.

A lovely proof that a monic quadratic equation has integer roots when the discriminant is a perfect square. It all starts with the quadratic formula.
