Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Actually puzzles are gyms for the mind. Books are beautiful national parks with winding trails leading to waterfalls and amazing vistas. Some have bears 3355
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Should be reversed if we are discussing the usual turn of events 020
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I'm so sad to hear of Andrea's passing. A lovely person and gifted, committed writer who gave us a lot. 1216
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I love that Maya de Vitry album. Glad you shout it out. Also Mama's Broke, chills on that one 010
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Seems like a good day to remind people that 25 years ago musicians were engaged in activism to abolish the death penalty. It seemed like that and prison reform in general would be the cause carrying us into a new era www.nytimes.com/2001/06/27/a...nytimes.comCRITIC'S NOTEBOOK; Death Penalty Ignites a Musical Coalition (Published 2001)Ann Powers Critic's Notebook column on death penalty as target of contemporary political music; hotos (M) 1194
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026just put choosin texas on a loop, that should do it 010
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Here’s a little treat, Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton performing their new duet tonight in Nashville. Dolly inspired 0153
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 29/09/2026It's been awesome to see Gena getting lots of flowers lately! 001
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Thanks for supporting Travelling! I’m a bit outside the Music Row scene at the moment but I will say that women managers, producers and execs have been making waves in Nashville despite the odds and I think that means women artists are better supported 110
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Miranda also on Kacey’s album so it’s all connected 030
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I feel everybody needs a palate cleanser so here is an indisputably great song about Abilene (where the Choosin’ Texas story takes place) youtu.be/wq6FxVxgM0M?...youtu.bePlains - "Abilene" (Lyric Video)YouTube video by ANTI- Records 6409
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Amanda Petrusich wrote about it well: www.newyorker.com/culture/song...newyorker.comThe Unlikely Reign of “Choosin’ Texas”Ella Langley’s chart-topping lament is about what everyone wants to do in mid-August: give in and let go. 050
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I’m from Seattle originally, my relatives think the entire South is one damned state 020
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It’s all grounded in old country music and SEC football rivalries 030
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It’s so easy to not be ignorant here on the internet 050
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 28/09/2026OK I will make one contribution to this whole ridic Choosin’ Texas “debate.” bother to listen and you’ll realize the narrator isn’t the one Choosin’ Texas, she’s getting dumped by a dude for a Texas girl and going back to Tennessee. whether you would or wouldn’t choose Texas is frankly irrelevant 9477
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 27/09/2026One funny thing is that "Choosin' Texas" was cowritten by Miranda Lambert and Luke Dick, two writers "cool" people actually like (Luke's also written with hipster fave Kacey Musgraves fwiw). Shoutout to fourth writer Joybeth Taylor who also cowrote my fave Langley cut "Weren't for the Wind" 110
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It's the perfect storm of people feeling they have to address something in which they have no actual interest and stale assumptions about certain genres and regions. "Choosin' Texas" is a good song and a verified phenomenon, and if people are incurious about it, that's their loss! 160
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Great thread and respect to @marissarmoss.bsky.social for the hard work and good thinking 1111
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Thank you!! I stuck with the albums included on the boxed set. A Dove (album and song) is a personal fave, I reviewed it for the Voice back in the day 110
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Because they only included American and English shows, though, it really didn't! My guilty pleasure rewatchable favorite is the Finnish noir Deadwind and my more high-minded favorite, I think, would either be the German series Dark or the French series Les Revenants. 100
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 25/09/2026My two favorite American TV shows of this century were both included in the bottom five of the Times Top 100 and that says a lot about me 1170
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Thank you!! I too have written many positive things about her. I’m so curious to see what this song is going to be to be honest. 120
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Risking my life with the swifties here but yes that is SO f-ed up 240
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Can confirm what Kenny is saying, that’s how it is with most big stars 140
Ann Powers @annkpowers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026An amazing film. If Gregg Araki can be embraced by the kids, why not John Greyson! 150
