Countdown to the crucial disability benefit vote – Version 6 Updated 21st June Thank you, Vicky Foxcroft. Your resignation — in protest at these cruel cuts — will be remembered. As a former shadow disabilities minister, you spoke up when it mattered. History will show who stood up — and who stayed

Put another post up on LinkedIn in an attempt to galvanise more health professionals to make noise agaisnt these deadly #DisabilityBenefits cuts. Professionals cannot, via silence, enable Labour to #TakethePIP.
As a disabled person and a consultant clinical psychologist, I am writing—highly unusually for me—on LinkedIn to ask your help in stopping disability benefits cuts.

What the government proposes to do with PIP, Universal Credit LCWRA and ESA is not a “reform.” It is an abandonment. It will cost lives, force people deeper into poverty, and destabilise those who are just about holding on.

PIP isn’t a luxury. It helps people eat, stay warm, stay clean, work, get to hospital appointments, and hold any kind of dignity. It also unlocks vital support for unpaid carers—many of whom are disabled themselves. Universal Credit's LCWRA 'support group' helps ensure that those who would be at 'substantial risk' of a deterioration in their health, or risk to life, aren't pressured by 'claimant commitments' to work.

But now, over a million people could lose that help—and the government keeps pointing to alternative options which, as a consultant, I can tell you just aren’t there. We are already seein

Labour’s benefit cuts could cost £38.2bn in lost GDP, £18.4bn in tax, £13.7bn in public services. 9.3m people — incl. 3m children — face hunger. The Trussell Trust joins NEF, JRF, and others: this isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s performative cruelty. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Alt text for the image:

A quote from Amnesty International (2025) is superimposed in large white serif font over a photo of the Palace of Westminster, with a Union Jack flag flying above one of its towers. The quote reads:
“If implemented, the extensive reforms proposed in the Pathway to Work Green Paper would further undermine the compliance of the UK social security system with the principle of adequacy, and would be a deliberately discriminatory, disproportionate and retrogressive violation of human rights.”
— Amnesty International, 2025
The image uses the iconic UK Parliament building to evoke national identity and legal authority, reinforcing the gravity of the human rights concerns.

The DWP is utter chaos. They want to push through this democidal 4+ rule, then run a consultation on PIP daily living changes in late autumn, with the OBR assessment not due till October and the safeguarding review in November. It’s an absolute shitshow. #WelfareNotWarfare

Dear Press, Labour say there’ll be safeguards for high-risk claimants when benefits are cut. But no major disability or mental health org believes that’s possible—and the risk assessment won’t even be published until autumn. Please don’t take their word for it. Dr Jay Watts

Labour MP Rachael Maskell: “You can’t compromise with a trade-off under which you say you will take more children from poor families out of poverty by placing more disabled people into poverty.” Exactly.

Right, back to pasting more signatures that have come in overnight into our open letter💜🙌. We have over 500 now!!! I am now hoping we can double this in the next week as that’s going to be even more useful for refusing ‘its in their interests’ arguments. sites.google.com/view/openlet...
A bold red and black graphic featuring a torn Union Jack, an NHS logo, and symbols for a food bank and disability access. Large text reads: “DISABILITY BENEFITS CUTS WOULD BE DEVASTATING.” Below, it says “350+ Health Professionals Demand Action” and quotes Dr Jay Watts: “These cuts will trigger a wave of preventable deaths.” A QR code appears with a call to action: “SIGN THE OPEN LETTER – Healthcare professionals: Add your name TODAY. Share this post — #WelfareNotWarfare.”

Yes, many MPs are sending copy-and-paste replies. No, that doesn’t mean they’re unaffected. The replies are performance—a show of calm, of “Okness.” But 100s and 1000s of emails land. They register. They unsettle underneath. Keep going if you've spoons. You’re shifting something.
