This painting is inspired by this passage in The Little Things That Kill- "We rocket through the portal and enter a sea of stars from distant galaxies. Up ahead a towering cloud, gorgeous and terrifying, drifts in space like a cosmic ghost." What does it look like to you? #booksky

Kids start developing social connections in their pre-teen years. One of the questions we can ask to help them make good friend choices is by asking, “How do you define a good friend?” Luckily, kids have a good sense of right vs. wrong, so you’ll often get good responses, like these. #socialskills

Where are story ideas born? The spark for Leeta Simtar came from a question I asked myself: Why would someone have to leave home to find home? Big thanks to Stephen Abramowitz for inviting me to his podcast Author-to-Author. What a great conversation! #booksky

Whenever we talk back-to-school, it’s always about the academics. We never ask how they’re doing socially--what friends they have, how they navigate conflict. Here are some ways to start that conversation with your kids. #childdevelopment #kidssocialskills #kidsbooks

Back-to-school means back-to-friends. Teachers help kids build academic skills. Parents help kids improve social skills. Ask your child "What makes a good friend?" Help them understand that when you ARE a good friend you're more likely to HAVE good friends. #booksky

Creative expression is a gift to yourself and others. When I need a break from my Writer's Mind, I express my creativity without words. Drawing, painting and/or photography. How do you express your creativity? #booksky

“Some books entertain us. Others stay with us long after we turn the last page. The Little Things That Kill: A Teen Friendship Afterlife Apology Tour is one of those books.” Thank you Corrine Soares (IG: @cornsbooktherapy) for such a thoughtful review and for taking my story into your heart.

As kids learn to resolve conflicts with friends, we can help by listening respectfully to their concerns and encouraging them to think about their own behavior as well as the behavior of others. #booksky

Thanks for you ongoing support, Andreas. Yes, I’ve considered it, though I haven’t yet come up with an idea for a sequel of either novel that excites me. First I’ll finish work on the third novel then I’ll see what comes next. ;)

While every family’s different, some of the challenges remain the same! As kids grow into teens and gain more independence, questions from the adults who care can feel like a lack of trust. TALK (respectfully) about what you want. LISTEN with an open heart to what your teen has to say.

There is no one way to write a book. To be successful at writing, you need to find the system that works for YOU. I start with a theme or question. For others, it may be a character’s journey or a setting that sparks a story. To start, notice what makes you most excited and curious. #booksky

Part of my writing process is getting major plot points down on paper, moving them around, and literally seeing what works. It allows for so much flexibility! And better yet, it’s fun, too. #booksky

A crucial part of development is not teaching kids what to think, but how to think. Posing open-ended questions like these give adolescents the opportunity to reflect before someone gives them an answer, building self-confidence. #booksky

I love connecting to the characters I write, and Iast weekend visiting our local farmer’s market, I wondered what Leeta would think. Her home planet of Fure is dry and dull; this is how I imagined a tour with her would go. I had to look way up to talk to her, she’s 6.5’ tall, I’m 5’2. #booksky

Our sense of identity comes from connection with others, especially our friend group. That’s why kids being welcomed into a “club” or being closed out can be a big deal. Here are some low-key conversation starters you can try with your child to help build friendship skills and self-confidence.

Social media has made it much easier for teens to be impulsive--to get back at someone immediately or participate in a new trend without a lot of time to consider it. The solution isn’t to discourage social media altogether; it’s empowering mindfulness. open.spotify.com/episode/0fUK...

The making of a novel. Sometimes the story, with its plots and sub plots and intercutting scenes, is so big you can’t hold it all in your head. That’s when low tech paper, pen, scissors, and a big table come in very handy. #writinglife #booksky
About 30 cut up pieces of paper organized in 4 columns, all with short descriptive notes, a pair of scissors, a notebook with a page of writing, and a Mac laptop arranged on an oak dining room table
