Scammers are impersonating Goodreads groups, w/ writers invited to "reading challenges" or group discussions--for a fee. This "12-month residency" is most elaborate I've seen. See tiny text I've underlined in red. Yes, this is yet another iteration of the AI-generated scams driving us all nuts

Just how bad is my "Can't deal with zombies" issue??? I got a query about zombies the other day, read a few pages, sent my typical "This is great but I cannot handle zombies," response and woke up screaming at 2:32 AM last night because zombies were going to eat my face. Y'all! I am cursed.

In a few years readers will tire of this & It'll shift to something else but FOR NOW, think high concept. It can no longer be as simple as, "Wife befriends the mistress." Readers and editors have seen a million of those. But what abt: Wife befriends mistress & drops her on a desert island w/ a bear*
110
Anne Tibbets - Literary Agent @annetibbets.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
*Not sure that's a great example. Ex of "high concept" Mys/Thr is a twist on setting, timeline, character, etc. Think, like, "A serial killer who kills serial killers being hunted by a serial killer." If your Mys/Thr manuscript has a high concept pitch, you've got a leg up.

Anne Tibbets - Literary Agent @annetibbets.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A Mys/Thr now needs all the twists, turns, reveals, voice, pace, and familiar tropes (ie. Closed door murder, who-done-it, man on the inside, etc) but 1 distinct factor/combo NOT seen before. Something conceptual that stands the book out from the others. Ex. Closed door mystery + during a pandemic*

Anne Tibbets - Literary Agent @annetibbets.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I'm hearing from editors that book pitches in Mystery & Thriller need to be high concept or need a big conceptual hook and since these are terms usually used in SFF, I think some Mys/Thr writers are struggling with what this means. It means familiar tropes with a cool unique NEW factor.

Every manuscript I ever sold has been in Word.docx. I have only ever submitted to publishers in that format. Legit questions Editors: Can you accept a submission in Google docs? Would you? Would it be required to convert to Word if it were acquired?

There's a certain repetitive cadence to the phrases with AI, the slightly off and overuse of metaphors and simile, and lack of emotional poignancy. I'm not schooled enough to give a class on spotting it, but to put it plainly, the vibes are off and I can just tell.

There are other agents who give the time to editorially work w/ prospective clients to get manuscripts ready for submission, and I do that - for clients I have already signed. But I, sadly, do not have the bandwidth to give that much direction and time to someone I might not sign in the end.

They have to have at least 1 of those things for me to request, but ultimately it's got to be all three. It's the writing which matters most. I don't bother requesting partials. If I encounter 1 issue w/ the manuscript while reading, that's fixable. 2, and I'm getting concerned. 3, I'm out.

Few were bad query letters. The letters don't really matter to me. For me it's a perfect storm of concept/writing/writer that I'm looking for at this stage in my agenting career. A concept I think can sell, writing which is polished and skilled, a writer I think I can work well with.
