Key findings: 🔥 Summer: Most heat flows toward glaciers, concentrated in the upper 150 m thanks to subglacial discharge. 🌀 Winter: Circulation is surprisingly strong but more 3D than in summer. ➡️ Two distinct winter inflow events: one cold & deep, one relatively warm!

What makes the data cool: 1️⃣ Most previous observations are summer-only, when fjords are easiest to access. 2️⃣ Our velocity measurements cover almost the full water column — rare in Greenland fjords. 3️⃣ Combining moorings and monthly transects: a high temporal AND spatial resolution.

Did you know Greenland fjord waters aren’t just heating up in summer… they can stay surprisingly warm in winter too? 🥵🇬🇱 We published a study with a full-year dataset from Greenland fjords, disentangling velocity patterns, heat transport, and mixing across all seasons. ☀️❄️ doi.org/10.1029/2025...

Greenland's fjords are pathways for exchange of heat and freshwater between the continental shelf and outlet glaciers of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Vries et al., present year-round water column velocity observations for Nuup Kangerlua in SW Greenland 🌊 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

📊 We find that the ratio of how much glaciated areas melt versus how much accumulation they receive is a good predictor for how important solid ice discharge as a freshwater source is in a region. 📖 Want to know more? Read here: tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...

🌨️ Before the melt season, seasonal snow melt can actually be the largest source of freshwater. 🧊 In the northwest and southeast of Greenland, solid ice discharge (e.g., calving icebergs) is the biggest contributor throughout the year.

🔬 In our research, we quantified and analyzed where the freshwater components entering fjords come from. ❄️ We find that in June-August, meltwater runoff from the ice sheet is the most important source of freshwater in Greenland's fjords (with regional differences).

🌊 Freshwater in Greenland fjords matters for ecosystems, i.e., plankton blooms. Also, fjords can mix freshwater before it is exported to the shelf seas, where it might or might not impact large-scale ocean circulation, such as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

On the train home from Vienna to Utrecht, I'm finishing my map I made during a short course "Scientific Worldbuilding" by @geologytalk.bsky.social at #EGU25. It was great to 'map out' my PhD so far (: . I'm still looking for a name of this island. Any thoughts?

Can I join too? And do you know of a starterpack for fjords/ Subpolar North Atlantic?

On Monday and Tuesday morning, I'm co-convening a ***NEW*** session on 'Advances at the ice-ocean interface', with orals in room L3 on Tuesday. We have talks on e.g. fjord observations in the Northern Hemisphere and models of fjord, both complex and simple! @egu.eu @egu-cr.bsky.social #egu25
