Interested in how cortical folding shapes functional brain networks, how normative modeling tracks central sulcus width changes over adulthood, or how an in-depth exploration of sulcal morphometry maps onto clinical conditions like ALS? 🧠 Come check out our posters!

5/6 Since emotions are processed by a complex network, we also investigated connectivity using gPPI. We observed increased connectivity between the right amygdala and right cuneus in siblings, which possibly reflects a compensatory mechanism.

4/6 Using a well-matched control condition and Bayesian fMRI analyses (Thanks @hyeminhan.bsky.social for the great tool!), we found an absence of group effects in most regions, including the amygdala. Instead, a potential endophenotypic pattern was identified in the right postcentral gyrus.

3/6 Most previous fMRI studies used neutral stimuli as a comparator, often showing impaired amygdala activity. However, recent findings indicate that such stimuli may not be perceived as emotionally neutral by patients with schizophrenia or their relatives.

2/6 Behaviorally, we observed the classic endophenotypic pattern: siblings showed intermediate performance compared to patients and controls. But what about the brain correlates?

1/6 I am happy to announce that our latest paper is out in Human Brain Mapping!🧠 In this work, we investigated emotion processing in patients with schizophrenia, their healthy first-degree relatives, and healthy controls. @gsescousse.bsky.social @EricFakra

Emotion Processing in Schizophrenia: Insights From a Brain Imaging Study Comparing Patients, Siblings, and Healthy Controls
This fMRI study investigates emotion processing as an endophenotype of schizophrenia by examining patients, siblings, and healthy controls. Using both frequentist and Bayesian voxelwise analyses, we ...

Neuroimaging paper published in Human Brain Mapping (with @annafiorito.bsky.social @gsescousse.bsky.social) bit.ly/4qHWGsE Compared neural activity towards negative facial expression (+ emotion) between patients with schizophrenia, their siblings, vs. health subjects. See below for more info. (1/3)

7/8 Our findings reinforce microglia's role in schizophrenia pathophysiology, providing insight into regional brain heterogeneity. It also supports the use of blood samples as potential neurobiological biomarkers, reinforcing the idea of schizophrenia as a whole-body disorder

6/8 Additionally, we identified differential expression of microglia genes, also expressed by peripheral macrophages, in the whole blood of individuals with SZ

5/8 Our findings reveal widespread transcriptional downregulation of microglia genes in 4 different brain regions (cerebellum, associative striatum, hippocampus, and parietal cortex)

Anna Fiorito @annafiorito.bsky.social · 15/01/2024
4/8 Using 9 independent transcriptional datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus database, we examined the expression of genes from a core human microglia signature. We included 8 brain regions and 3 peripheral tissues (cumulating 267 individuals with SZ and 237 healthy controls)

3/8 Moreover, there is a dire need for readily accessible SZ biomarkers. In this regard, peripheral tissues are a promising method to probe the transcriptome in a minimally invasive way and allow for the identification of biomarkers of altered inflammatory processes in SZ

2/8 Emerging evidence involves microglia alterations in schizophrenia (SZ) pathophysiology and previous research reported abnormal expression of microglia genes. However, the regional specificity of these brain transcriptional abnormalities remains unclear
