Lack of diagnosis of #MECFS meant that I wasn’t informed that exertion was dangerous. This year I pushed myself beyond my limits and ‘crashed’. Now every thing I do is planned: standing up #POTS, walking, working at my desk. My world is very small now but my memories of wild places keeps me going.

After a severe #MECFS crash six months ago I became bed bound and housebound for months. I’m only slowly managing to recover with the hope that life will go back to some semblance of ‘normal’. On Saturday, I walked up a mountain track in northern Victoria.

From the days before social media, Rodger Deakin savoured the simplicity of random ideas… “Jottings, in their spontaneity and complete absence of any craft, are often so much truer to what I actually feel or think at a given moment.” #RodgerDeakin #naturewriting #eastcoastkin #writing #natureheals

Recovery has made my world very small of late. To keep my mind from being consumed by my situation I am focussing on the beauty of the small things around me. #cureME #fibromyalgia #cancerschmancer #natureheals #MECFS

Reading poetry out loud tonight by Gerard Manley Hopkins. What a wild tongue twisting challenge it is but so vibrant and alive. #poetry #natureheals

Thinking about the beautiful lotus flowers that I saw in full bloom at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne a couple of years ago. It’s been one of those days. #biophilia #natureheals #fibromyalgia #MECFS #planttherapy
A lotus flower emerging from a sea of green lotus leaves. The cream outer petals have opened to reveal dusky pink inner petals still in bud-like form.

Stillness. Magpies carolling in the street outside and the cat snoozing in a ray of morning sunshine.

Seasonal harvest in challenging times. Although cancer treatment has well and truly ended now, #fibromyalgia still has its grip on me leaving me confined to bed. #natureheals #eatyourveg. Some days are tough but it’s essential for me to hold on to happiness.
Parsley flowers, their inflorescences opened like a firework, sitting in a glass on the window sill. A rough bouquet of fragrant basil (still with white flowers attached) and parsley sprigs on a white table cloth. At its base, there are small crimson cherry tomatoes and larger unripe beefsteak tomatoes.

Each year I take myself camping to recover from #fibromyalgia. This year, I’m also recovering from cancer. Being here reminds me to pay attention to daily moments; respond with compassion to my chatter of self recrimination and observe the beauty and diversity of life in this remarkable landscape.

The landscape of Avoca, Tasmania through a hand made antique lace curtain. Light from the setting sun illuminates the otherwise blue grey clouds. There are patches of dusty blue sky throughout.

It’s such a great season for roses in Central Victoria. This is a heritage rose from my front garden. Two years ago, I picked some flowers for a friend who had just finished chemotherapy. Little did I know that two years later it would mark the end of mine. #cancer #natureheals
A large yellow rose with only the slightest tinge of pink on the outer petals. A large hello rose with dark green foliage in the background. This rose is more open than the first and the pink tinges on the outer petals are more prominent.

Yesterday, I sat in the garden to take in spring. My post chemo / fibromyalgia fatigue was so intense that I couldn’t stand. So, I sat there for an hour, flowers in full bloom all around me watching honeybees up close, sipping nectar from one flower, gathering pollen from the next and felt lucky.
An inflorescence of mauve geranium flowers. Some are open, others finished or still in bud. In the background, a bed of ‘snow in summer’ and a green veggie box. A lily of the valley plant flowering in a shady spot in my garden. Its tiny, bell shaped, cream flowers nod on an inflorescence. Droplets of water are still present on the lush, green leaves from overnight rains. A deep pink cabbage rose blooms on a long, reaching, horizontal branch. It’s the first of the numerous buds on the branch to open. Every plant in this garden takes its own direction and finds the light in its own way.

It’s that time of year… for planting veggie seeds. Way behind due to a year of intensive and challenging cancer treatment but I’ll still give it a go.. #spring #cancerrecovery #sustainability #veggies #eatyourveg #thankgodforcancerresearch
Old traditional Australian MacRobertson’s chocolate assortment tin. It’s decorated with pastel pink and gold flowers and filled with half opened packets of seeds from last year’s planting.

This week I read Claire Keegan’s ‘Small Things Like These’ which asks us how we will act on injustice. Brilliant writing. Highly recommend. #BookerPrizeShortlister #literaryfiction #BookClub

My wild, unkempt garden with a native lawn is teeming with life. Three skinks darted anxiously by, blue banded bees are whizzing around inspecting flowers and the eastern spinebill perches on the stakes in the garden to take a sip of nectar from the salvias. #wildgardens #wildlife #biodiversity

It’s been a tricky week with some health challenges. So in between appointments in Melbourne today, I took myself to the Royal Botanic Gardens and gasped in wonder at the stunning display of lotus in flower.
