Would love to hear more about this paper. Sounds interesting!

The truth is that biases creep into every interview / job search process, in every field. What we can do as candidates is leverage these by preparing. If you knew what committees actually wanted to know, I think you’d have an advantage in your ability to focus and prepare.

Yes. This is totally true. And I remember the days of the upfront letters and phone screenings. In my “big” job market year, I had one job where they decided to combat the biases by making me turn off my camera and remove identifiers from my materials. It was an absolute circus.

When I was preparing for the job market in 2021, I read a book published in 2015 as a guide on this process. I applied for 70 jobs that year, going through many first and second round interviews. Almost nothing in my experience differed from what the book outlined.

(3) The zoom interview is a screening interview- the main question the committee is asking is “is this candidate a real, mostly-coherent person, whose behavior seems pretty consistent with what’s in their materials?”

(2) Our standard practice is to check references before campus visits (for finalists!). This is common. It reduces the time waste for both the committee and for the references. We ask for references in advance so we know you have them.

I was on the market in 2021 and have chaired 3 search committees since. None of this is new. Here’s what’s actually going on: (1) Committees always review materials and choose their top 4-10, based on strength AND fit for what we need.

These job ads are often desperation jobs: “we need a faculty member to start this Fall, or we won’t be able to teach our courses.” I recently chaired two committees like this. If these are the kinds of jobs you’re looking at, your best bet is to be a bit broader in your statements.

It’s the last day of teaching for the spring semester. My courses never have final exams, because… We all just want to be done at this point.

I’m from Ukraine. My mother: concert pianist. Her mother (my grandma): linguistics professor. Her mother (my great grandmother, born in 1902): government accountant. All had graduate degrees. Same on father’s side. Same for my parents’ friends. None of the women stayed home 🤷‍♀️

For a while, BlueSky was blocked in Mississippi. I got so used to that… stopped trying to log in. But I just read about some Ole Miss prof who’s getting noise for a BlueSky post… If he can post, he’s not blocked 😳 I checked. Yup. It’s back.

⭐️ New paper out @LHB: in “Quick and Dirty…" we studied COVID-era, virtual plea colloquies, with some troubling findings. The paper was selected as the Editor's Choice, so it’s open access: doi.org/10.1037/lhb0... #psychlaw #academicsky

I think your experience might be more common, but only because academia suffers from incompetence in management. Most chairs and deans have no actual skill or training in managing people…

Yes, we have annual evaluation reports. One odd feature: the eval schedule is calendar year, while the promotion calendar is academic year 🤷‍♀️ Schedule aside, I’ve found these to be useful in several ways…

It’s a strange time for the news, but nonetheless… This Fall, I start a tenure track faculty position in my school/dept., after surviving a competitive search as an internal candidate in a teaching-track position. #academicsky #psychlaw

My personal observation is that many Russians have been quite literally brainwashed by their own govt-controlled media for over a decade. I wonder whether that’s been captured in any recent studies.

Just read that Zimbardo died 2 weeks ago. Psychology lost another giant. In 2019, I had the remarkable experience of meeting the man at APA. This will forever be one of my favorite professional memories.

Thanks to many starter pack creators, I have cool new followers. So… time for an intro: I’m a #psychlaw researcher + forensic counselor, working in a criminal justice department. Interested in decisional processes within the legal system, especially in sexual crime cases. Lovely to “meet” y’all!

I have multiple calendars (personal, academic, family, consulting) from different platforms and integrate them all in different colors into iCal. I don’t put things on my calendar unless it’s actually for me to attend or do.

Now that I have all these brilliant new followers on here, I could really use your suggestions: for an experiment I’m planning, I need a phone app that would allow me to securely assign participants into chat pairs, and I could get a transcript of each dyad’s chat. Any ideas?

This really jives with my experience in practice. We do okay (not great) with Justice-involved youth, but essentially ignore everyone else. The result is that forensic treatment with a trauma-informed approach is rare, and actual trauma treatment is seen as counterproductive.

Just got an R&R (minor revision), which is a great way to start the year… But also, left me a little disappointed. Some reviewers see their role as proof-readers, others as harshest critics. Of three reviewers, only one gave thoughtful feedback I can integrate in the paper. #AcademicSky

I did, and then students told me they didn’t have the option to “like” anything… so either they didn’t see it, or institution removed this option for them 🤷‍♀️
