Picture shows translucent, pumpkin-orange antennae that taper to opaque gray as they reach their connecting point- the center of a black uni-brow-like line above big, angled, almondine eyes. These large compound eyes plus the mouth, throat, and what look like nostrils (actually simple eyes, I think), are black. Midsection is also black, narrowing as it approaches its final, ovoid, black-and-yellow-striped part. It's front legs are bright orange and appear to be composed of 7 segments, each. Each front leg's segment farthest from the body is white and has tiny white hook-like structures on the end. Mid- and back legs are black in segments closest to the body and switch to yellow-orange. One wing extends from either side of the body, displaying yellow-orange near the body and shifting to charcoal gray by the wingtips.

Black and white photo of a neighbor's flowers after they'd gone to seed. The largest flower is an almost heart-shaped collection of long, thin seeds on a thin stem. The dark center curves in, bordered by a lighter berm of densely-packed seeds, distinguishable only as dark dots. Around the left abs right edges, seeds are more loosely connected, pulling away from the compact center. The seeds along the edge have oblong heads on thin needles, making each appear to be a corndog on a stick. The seeds are embedded in cottony white fibers. Some of the fibers have begun pulling away from the rest and appear as though they will eventually pull loose and drift to the ground. In the foreground we're looking into the fuzzy pale yellow and green opening of the cup. Along the rim of the opening are small, tan, pom-pom like fibrous clusters. The sides of the cup are a smooth evergreen, also interspersed with tan pom-pom-like clusters (aka spine clusters or areoles) and occasional longer, thin spines. In the background, blurred, is part of the cactus's pads, including longer, thicker spines and more areoles.

I joined my brother and nephews in Oaxactun, Guatemala, this past April (2026). My brother spent two years there a couple decades ago and wanted to share his Guatemalan community and his boys to meet.

This is a picture I took of one of the elder's cookfires. She seems both wise and knowledgeable. Her son is highly educated and has a good job an hour away in Tikal. They choose to live in this remote village.
