Apologies for the late response. Linen can v smooth to v course, depends on what you like. I use a fine-ish linen. Surface is a little more organic, less regular in the weave. It’s also derived from the flax plant same as linseed oil. It’s also stronger than cotton.

The closest I’ve got to this is re-painting in oils (and maybe reimagining to some degree) the mattes I painted for 5th Element and LOTR.. just for the hell of it, ya know, what if’s!

My brushes are well and truly dusted off as I’m working on a new scifi painting at the moment. I doubt trad mattes are going to be making a comeback anytime soon but I’d love to be utterly wrong about that!!

I’ll have to go find out but I’m curious to know why they’re using traditional matte paintings and how many did they paint vs digi? As much as I love seeing their return I don’t see a benefit apart from retro vibes and a ‘why the hell not’!
