Juneteenth is often called our country’s second Independence Day. Today marks 161 years since Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved people were free -- over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Court decisions shape nearly every part of our lives. Beyond criminal law, our Court also rules on civil matters that impact everything from utility costs and environmental protections to personal injury cases and much, much more.

Despite the state constitutional guarantee of a sound basic public education, our schools in North Carolina are severely under-resourced, with devastating impacts for students and teachers.

Today marks two years since the North Carolina Supreme Court reheard arguments in the Leandro case, nearly 30 years after five counties first went to court seeking the constitutional promise of a “sound, basic education” for their children.

As an attorney and as your Justice, I have sought to ensure that all people are treated equally under the law, including protecting worker’s rights. I’m looking forward to working with the NC State AFL-CIO to guarantee that our Courts continue to protect our rights.

How do we bridge the divides in America & build a brighter future? It will require a system of justice that adheres to the rule of law — a system in which no one is above the law and justice does not depend on gender, wealth, status, political party, race, creed or color.🇺🇸
