Five years ago today, the @ec.europa.eu committed to deliver proposals to #EndtheCageAge, but so far, it has failed to deliver on its promise. So we took action in Brussels with @ciwf.eu, @anima-int.bsky.social & the EtCA coalition, urging the EU to deliver proposals to #EndtheCageAge 📣

For years, "welfarists" and "abolitionists" were two opposing camps in animal advocacy. New @sandcastlesblog.bsky.social post traces how this started to change. How does this false dichotomy hinder us and what should we focus on instead? ⬇️ sandcastlesblog.substack.com/p/winners-ch... #animalrights

After seven failed attempts, Anima International helped secure a legally binding ban on fur farming in Poland, the world's second-largest producer. The industry had deep pockets and serious political cover. We had a campaign and a lot of stubbornness. ✊

18 member states have already banned fur farming. Griffin Carpenter's analysis shows the industry generates -€9.2 million in gross value added. It doesn't contribute to the EU economy, it drains it. There is no case for protecting it.

The EU's own food safety authority, EFSA, concluded in 2025 that the welfare needs of fur-farmed animals cannot be met under current farming conditions. "Stricter standards" doesn't fix a system EFSA says is fundamentally broken.

Minks, foxes, raccoon dogs are confined in tiny wire cages their entire lives, then killed for pelts auctioned off mostly to Chinese buyers. This is the industry the Commission is choosing not to end.

But here, the retailers are improving as well – as early as 2024 Lidl already phased out caged eggs from all own-brand products sold in Poland. We're glad to see these steps in the right direction, which ensure that customers are not unknowingly supporting suffering.

Even customers who consciously choose not to buy eggs from caged hens often aren't aware that they are still present as an ingredient in many products like cakes or dressings.

This is why we fight to end cages for all egg-laying hens. It is currently the main focus of our work in France and Poland. And the industry continues to make progress – this announcement from Lidl is only one of the examples. ✅

Caged hens live in extreme confinement. Each hen stands in a space roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper. They can't walk, stretch their wings or perform many of their basic natural behaviours like dustbathing. This is the only life they will ever know.

Anima International @anima-int.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
What makes this change so significant? Supplying Lidl's egg demand requires a flock of around 2 million hens. Lidl's 100% cage-free policy means this entire flock now operates without cages. 🐔❤️

In 2021, the EC made a historic commitment to ban cages for farmed animals by the end of 2023. This promise remains unfulfilled to this day. We're outside the court today, demanding justice for the 300 M animals still suffering in cages across Europe and the 1.4 M citizens who signed the ECI.
