iirc, Waymo has reported 2 or 3 crashes that were just flat tires from road debris or driving over curbs or into ditches. In each incident the robot was towed.

A Waymo robot w passenger pulled over bc of a flat tire. A telop cancelled the trip and told the passenger she could book another robot. IDK why he didn't offer to book it. "I made it to my final destination but I ended up having to take a Lyft to get there!" OP: tiktok.courtneykatrice, Phoenix

Waymo robots have a long history of hitting chains and other entry/exit controls, esp automated gates/arms. It was part of one of their NHTSA recalls, though, as with most of their recalls, the crashes have continued post "fix." bsky.app/profile/anic...

A Tesla robotaxi could not handle an ordinary chain across a parking lot exit, so a human telop drove it away from the chain: 3200 block of Samuell Blvd, Dallas, Texas Waymo has a similar and maybe worse problem w chains at/across parking lot exits. OP: x.reggieoverton, 4x speed

Another Waymo robot used their standard & illegal 'hit me' maneuver to make another turn from a side street onto a major street: 4th St and Jesse, San Francisco They have been doing this at least as long as they have been uncrewed (2022) in SF. Many videos of it esp in SoMa. OP: ig.bendaycolorado

"He was genuinely YELLING at the Waymo, we were just all excited for it to move" OP: tiktok.lil.soso_ A telop was prob excited too. Waymo relies on multiple layers of AI to misunderstand clear (to ppl) hand signals. Moravec's paradox just got a $5 billion loan. Map bias is a helluva ADS drug/bug.

Teslans habitually create confusion to mask poor decisions, from the top down. Regardless, arguing about sensors without even knowing their specs is kinda pointless. Waymo may need more sensing low in front for floods & snow and underneath for safety, eg KitKat was underneath. Huge blind spot.

Tesla's reported one crash of their ADS w an animal, a dog in daylight, as of ~mid-August. Musk's explanation is nonsensical. Texas gets dark well before 10 pm. fwiw, nearly all Waymo's animal crashes have been at night, ie Waymo's lidar is not saving all the family pets. bsky.app/profile/anic...

You quoted Nvidia's vice president of automotive misrepresenting both Waymo's hw and ops redundancies, ie both of these statements are demonstrably false: “If any single thing goes wrong on the car, there’s a backup” “Even if they can’t complete the mission with the car, there’s a backup car”

Waymo's largest depot was ~full at ~2:30 pm today: 201 Toland St, SF Waymo robots spend most of their time parked. In 2023, Waymo applied to make the building on the left (301 Toland) a private parking garage for their depot employees. SFBOS unanimously rejected it. OP: reddit.techno-phil-osoph

Also, buried in articles about this is a claim Amazon is building a data center at the old Recology facility they bought at 900 7th Street, except they've always planned it to be a distribution center for deliveries, not a data center. Amazon's way too cheap to build the expensive kinda DC in SF.
030
John Berry @aniccia.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
More like political posturing. AFAIK, only one data center of significance has been built in San Francisco in the 21st century (400 Paul). SF has few/~4 ~major data centers bc of economics not politics. SF gets nearly all its compute same as water, food, and electricity, from where it's cheaper.

Prob depends on whether the harm/crashes alarm NHTSA enough to act. Waymo has pretty effectively captured state regulators. Also, Waymo's bike lane violations get most of the attention, but they also illegally use fire lanes, bus stops, no stopping anytime zones, etc. bsky.app/profile/anic...

John Berry @aniccia.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
If they do and there are related crashes, NHTSA would prob recall them, as they did Tesla FSD for automated speeding in 2023 and for rolling stops in 2022.

An old thread on this w focus on San Francisco where for years Waymo's had by far their densest deployment. There's a video ~daily from other geos where someone complains about being stuck behind a wall of Waymo robots driving ~at the speed limit. Parking lots maybe worse. bsky.app/profile/anic...

One slower robot on a busy multilane road may be an annoyance, but the AV mfg plan, intent, and financial imperative is to keep increasing the number/density of robots until they and their behavior dominate, fully roboticizing local driving culture. Lotta videos of it from Waymo's mature geos.

At least 9 Waymo robots failed at another level crossing signal: 100 block of NE 29th St, Miami, Florida At least 3 robots had hazard lights on, so they knew they'd failed and should have alerted telops. Waymo has never explained why their robots can't handle this. OP: tiktok.thewarriorprincessx

Local TV news picked up the story, though Waymo didn't respond to their questions. AFAICT, Florida traffic law says if you are in an intersection when the light turns red, then you should clear the intersection as soon as safe. But why/how were they stuck in the intersection when the light changed?

This video of the apparent resolution of this incident implies the Waymo robot never "understood" it was going the wrong way, as it kept on going the wrong way once it had a path instead of turning around to go the right/legal direction.

Waymo robots routinely pass cyclists & other VRU. They've even crossed double yellow lines and driven into oncoming traffic to do it. A video of it so alarmed NHTSA they conducted an investigation. Robots cannot be "patient" or do anything "angrily." Their behavior can literally change overnight.

We have too much data. They are less safe for ~99% of US driving, so far. In fact, they are ~useless for ~99% of US driving. Literally, we know if they were tested for representative US trips they would fail ~99%. AV/ADS "safety" convos depend on framing. Waymo prefers to limit it to ~1% of cases.
