Is his name Polyphemus?

As a descendant of Sherman, I unequivocally acknowledge his legacy leaves a bit of a squicky feeling in my gut. On the other hand, his 5th cousin 3x removed, Founding Father Roger Sherman, and Roger’s grandson, Roger Sherman Baldwin, are both much better choices if we DID want a Sherman Day…

For the 4 days before his death, he was incoherent, trembling, speaking only to “spectral and imaginary objects on the walls”, calling for “Reynolds”, unable to tell anyone what had happened. Finally, on Oct 7, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe muttered his final words, “Lord help my poor soul”, and died.

No one sure if Poe was a victim of cooping. Details of his death are lacking. There is no existing medical record or autopsy report. All we know is that when Poe was found, on election day, outside Ryan's 4th Ward polls, he was delirious and disheveled, wearing clothes that were not his own.

And oftentimes, one vote wasn’t enough. These men would take their victims from polling place to polling place, or sometimes take them to the same polling place, but wearing a hat, or a coat, or a different set of clothes entirely, and force them to vote again. And again. And again.

Politics in mid-1800s Baltimore was completely unhinged. A favorite form of voter fraud at the time was “cooping”. It involved candidates hiring men to round up “pigeons” in a tavern or cellar (the “coop”), plying them with alcohol /violence, and forcing them to vote for their chosen candidate.

No one knows for sure what got him, and we may never know. Theories abound, from heart disease, syphilis, alcoholism, mercury poisoning, to even rabies. But one of the more compelling theories is related to the election being held in Baltimore on the day Poe was found, dying, in a ditch.

Jan 29, 1845, E. A. Poe’s “The Raven”, was printed in the NY Evening Mirror. It was the first time it was published under Poe’s name. Oct 3, 1849, Poe would be found in a ditch, delirious, dying 4 days later. Many know that story, but did you know that it was possibly voter fraud that killed him?

(Content warning: ICE violence) At around 1:40 this afternoon, I witnessed federal agents with ICE and CBP arresting a US citizen after hitting her car from behind, and then kneeling on the head of a legal observer in the snow, preventing breathing and bloodying their face.

Many refugees are refugees because is the service they’ve provided to the US. They are interpreters, guides and informants. Without them, our overseas troops are put in even more danger. Detaining and deporting them to countries who will imprison or kill them is a betrayal of promises made.

An asteroid the size of 240 two-slice toasters is roughly equivalent to the mass of 1,071 stoats. However, if it’s 240 four-slice toasters, you looking at ~2,215 stoats. (Rounding up, because nobody wants pieces of stoats.)

I once attempted a marathon along the Thames, until I slipped on an elongated, slimy fish that had slithered up on the banks in a serpentine fashion. It wasn’t the fish’s fault, however. I was simply eel-prepared.

I once had breakfast a couple tables away from Brendan Fraser. I really wanted to say hi, but he was with his wife and kid, and I didn’t want to be a jerk. Also had breakfast a few tables away from David Prowse during a convention weekend. He looked a wee grumpy so I minded my own business.

If it looks like you wrapped it with your feet, thats just proof that you didn’t pay some uncaring stranger to do it. And the worse it looks, the bigger the struggle, the more it shows your love. Or at least that’s what I tell myself when my wrapping efforts go sideways.

Having a snake in the house wasn’t particular alarming. It was how my toddler son, who I’d just put to bed in the same room, nonchalantly called, “Mom, theres a snake in the room!” *note - we lived with my folks in So Cal at the time, where we also had rattlers…

I once had a mouse problem. Then they magically disappeared. Shortly after I realized I hadn’t seen one in a while, I found a mid-sized gopher snake lounging in my bedroom. Potential solution?

Meanwhile the Admin. is working on an event at the White House itself where grown men and women will pummel each other into a bloody, concussed mess of broken limbs in front of a drunken, cheering crowd. But sure, let’s worry about folks dancing around in sparkly dresses, lip synching to Cher.

It just means I’ll be sitting there for a while. Hope my kidnappers have a good mattress for me. If I’m going to be there for years, it’s probably best for all concerned if I’m not cranky from sleeping on a bad mattress. No sense in all of us being victims of my foul mood.

My grandma swore for decades that she woke up in the middle of the night, and stepped out into the hallway to see a lumberjack, glowing blue, helping her toddler son down the rickety stairs to the bathroom in their place in Chicago. No other fanciful tales, just the same lumberjack story.

Absolutely this. Imagining a third party that is going to magically save all is pointless. We need to force change from within the Dem party, retire the roadblocks and replace them with real progressive leaders. There are more of us than there are of them, and we don’t have to keep electing cowards

Periodic (and hopefully final) reminder: James Watson did indeed co-discover the double-helix structure of DNA. He discovered it in Rosalind Franklin’s notes. P.S.- he was also a huge racist. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Sending demons into pigs and watching them drown? Fine. Telling Abraham to murder his son, only to send an angel when he’s seconds away to say “just testing you! Lolz!” Sure. Saul calling a witch to summon the spirit of a dead prophet for battle advice? Why not? Mind reading? DEVIL WORSHIP!!

So don’t let the GOP’s lies about who is running this clown show continue. Make sure everyone knows what is at stake, and who is actually fighting for the 99%. And stand behind the Dems who are brave enough to fight with what little leverage they have. Then we primary the rest.

So, yes, the Dems could vote to stop the shutdown, and sacrifice millions of Americans on the altar of GOP greed. But the GOP could ALSO stop the shutdown by amending the appropriations bill to restore programs and benefits everyday Americans depend on for their very existence.

Also at risk are your healthcare subsidies, which are set to expire this year. The GOP says “we’ll figure that out later”. The Dems are demanding that those be included NOW. If they give in and vote to approve, your premiums may double. Can you afford that? I sure can’t. www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...

People like Sen. Fetterman are trying to convince Dems to approve the administration’s appropriations bill to allow SNAP and other programs to resume. But that bill contains PERMANENT cuts to Medicaid and social security. But apparently that’s a price he’s willing to let you all pay.

It’s vital we share with EVERYONE, not just like-minded folk, who is responsible for SNAP going offline. It has nothing to do with healthcare for undocumented people (which was never a thing), or Dem stubbornness. It’s about tax breaks for the rich & the GOP is ready to let you starve to get them.
