my least favourite thing about Google these days is that it will completely rewrite your search query behind the scenes and then Gemini will reply to you as if you are a little baby who can't spell
Google search for the term "pneumonic plague". the AI Overview says: "The term 'mnemonic plague' appears to be a slight mishearing or typo for pneumonic plague, the severe, lung-based form of the infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis."

here's the Life Is Strange girls engaging in one of Max' favourite pastimes
Max Caulfield and Chloe Price sitting on a log somewhere together listening to a portable radio. the radio is tuned to NPR. Max is sitting tight happily. Chloe has a blank expression on her face and is sitting in a very restless way. the radio is saying:
"There’s a short circuit between my brain and my tongue, thus 'leave me the fuck alone' comes out as 'well, maybe, sure, I guess I can see your point...'" (which is a quote from Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris)

it's been over 7 years and i still think about Grimm's Law Guy like once a month
Reddit screenshot of a thread in the subreddit badlinguistics titled "What is some bad linguistics you've seen or heard from linguists?"

the highlighted reply, from tovarischkrasnyjeshi, says:
"I knew a man who worked on language preservation and documentation when they really thought Gaelic was going to die, but his actual grasp on linguistics is really bad. He'd refer to any sound change as 'Grimms' Law', yet, paradoxically, called Grimms' and Verner's Laws 'Lautverschiebung' as if that didn't just mean 'sound change' in German.

"Apart from that mostly just issues of people talking outside their field of expertise, like mixing up language families or not knowing that Altaic hasn't been a thing many serious people defend for a long time. Occasionally I've run into nostraticists or their Africanist equivalents but what can you do?"

The morning comes, the night decays, the watchmen leave
their stations;
The grave is burst, the spices shed, the linen wrapped up:
The bones of death, the cov'ring clay, the sinews shrunk & dry'd.
Reviving shake, inspiring move breathing! awakening!
Spring like redeemed captives when their bonds & bars are burst:
Let the slave grinding at the mill, run out into the field:
Let him look up into the heavens & laugh in the bright air:
Let the inchained soul shut up in darkness and in sighing,
Whose face has never seen a smile in thirty weary years:
Rise and look out, his chains are loose, his dungeon doors are open.
And let his wife and children return from the opressors scourge.
They look behind at every step & believe it is a dream.
Singing. The Sun has left his blackness, & has found a fresher morning
And the fair Moon rejoices in the clear & cloudless night;
For Empire is no more, and now the Lion & Wolf shall cease. The terror answerd: I am Orc, wreath'd round the accursed tree:
The times are ended: shadows pass the morning gins to break:
The fiery joy, that Urizen perverted to ten commands,
What night he led the starry hosts thro' the wide wilderness:
That stony law I stamp to dust: and scatter religion abroad
To the four winds as a torn book, & none shall gather the leaves
But they shall rot on desart sands, & consume in bottomless deeps.
To make the desarts blossom, & the deeps shrink to their fountains.
And to renew the fiery joy, and burst the stony roof.
That pale religious letchery, seeking Virginity,
May find it in a harlot, and in coarse-clad honesty
The undefil'd tho' ravish'd in her cradle night and morn:
For every thing that lives is holy, life delights in life:
Because the soul of sweet delight can never be defil'd.
Fires inwrap the earthly globe, yet man is not consumd:
Amidst the lustful fires he walks: his feet become like brass,
His knees and thighs like silver, & his breast and head like gold

it's crazy how Ryan Armand showed up out of nowhere, created one of the greatest works of sequential art in history, and then completely disappeared
A watercolor comic page titled "minus." in soft blues and greens.

Row 1: minus and a green-haired girl are sitting together on a grassy hill under a starry night sky. The girl points upward and says, "The stars are so beautiful. I wish I could reach up and grab one from the sky." minus reaches her hand high into the air and plucks something from the sky.

Row 2: minus looks down at her hand, which now holds a glowing star. In the next panel, she releases it between them, and it suddenly bursts into a blinding, immense light. The intense, explosive light instantly obliterates the other girl, reducing her to a crumbling, ashy silhouette.

Row 3: A single, wide, wavy panel illustrates time frantically rewinding. The girl's ashy outline pulls back together to reform her body, minus' actions play in reverse, and the girl's original dialogue appears with backward text as reality completely resets.

Row 4: The timeline returns to the exact starting moment. The girl points to the sky again, repeating, word-for-word, "The stars are so beautiful. I wish I could reach up and grab one from the sky." This time, having seemingly retained the memory of the disastrous outcome, minus keeps her hands resting on her knees and simply replies, "yeah." The final panel shows them sitting safely and peacefully under the vast, starry sky.

not joking. from Craze: Gin and Debauchery in an Age of Reason, by Jessica Warner, pp. 130–131:
Having succeeded in avoiding any civil unrest in the first few weeks of the act, Walpole wanted nothing more than to let it lapse. The fact that virtually no one in the capital actually complied with the act doubtless amused him to no end: Jekyll now looked like an old fool and the Crown continued to profit from wholesale sales of distilled spirits, which suffered only a temporary setback in the act’s early years. Its most important clause, requiring publicans to purchase a license to sell distilled spirits, was almost universally ignored. As already noted, the new licensing fee amounted to a virtual prohibition on retail sales, and naturally only the largest and most respectable public houses could possibly afford it. Two of these, Amos Wenman’s Punch House on London Bridge and the London Punch House of Ludgate Hill, immediately took out licenses, but only because eight excisemen had been posted at each establishment “to prevent their acting contrary to the Tenour” of the new act. Indeed, only twenty licenses, each good for only one year, were ever purchased over the lifetime of the act, meaning that the vast majority of the nation’s publicans were breaking the law every time they sold distilled spirits. And break it they did. Some publicans made little or no attempt to conceal the fact that they were still selling gin, while others either sold substitutes or simply continued to sell gin under new and often defiant names. Less than one week after the act had taken effect it was reported that “tho’ the Common People are deprived of Gin, there are various Drams invented and sold at the Gin Shops, in lieu thereof...” These included a variety of hasty wines concocted from berries and other fruits, in addition to spirits sold under such fanciful names as “sangree,” “tow-row,” “cuckold’s comfort,” “Parliament gin,” “Bob,” “makeshift,” “the last shift,” “the ladies’ delight,” “the baulk,” and “King Theodore of Corsica.”

REAL MUSIC IS OBJECTIVE AND MATHEMATICAL
Acharya Pingala, Plato, Pythagoras and Xunzi KNEW that true music is a reflection of cosmic mathematical form. They studied the properties of sound and knew that TRUE MUSIC can orient the psyche toward understanding of the origin.
[clip art of colourful music notes in random positions, captioned "This is a LIE"]

YOU ARE BEING CUT OFF FROM THE WORLD OF FORMS BY SLOP

REAL MUSIC:
Comradely Objects, by Horse Lords
Eonta, by Iannis Xenakis
Giant Steps, by John Coltrane
The Well-Tempered Clavier, by J. S. Bach
Arrhythmia, by Antipop Consortium
The Ascension, by Glenn Branca
ALL of these musicians seriously contemplate the MATHEMATICAL FORMS that underlie reality and attempt to capture high-resolution representations of them in sonic form

NOT MUSIC:
Loveless, by My Bloody Valentine (It's just random noise without regard to the relations between sounds layered with sloppy emotionalism)
Tristan und Isolde, by Richard Wagner (A bunch of contentless orchestration that goes nowhere for as long as possible)
The Marshall Mathers LP, by Eminem (He tricks you into thinking that he's doing something interesting but all that's going on is he's talking fast)
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, by Dream Theater (Nothing but technical wank with no sense of deep structure, a parody of true mathematical music)
Helicopter String Quartet, by Karlheinz Stockhausen (Pure egomaniacal subjectivism, the symptom of a soul that has cut itself off completely from absolute reality)
At Folsom Prison, by Johnny Cash (Entertaining and sometimes pleasant combinations of sounds but just a vehicle for words, the same could be said for almost any folk "music" outside of Mali and Bulgaria)

## *Puella Magi Madoka Magica*
- Madoka Kaname attains knowledge of the world of magical girls by, first, negation of "ordinary" reality (natural consciousness), then negation of the illusory happiness of magical girls
- The magical girl is a force of *negation*. Firstly "hope", negation of entropy; then negation of the negation, return of entropy in the form of "despair"; then negation of despair by a new magical girl
- The life cycle of magical girls is a *bad infinity*: negation of negation of negation without *determinacy*; no determinate negation (no *Aufhebung*) means no progression. (*Fort! Da! Fort! Da! Fort! Da!*)
- However, the cycle produces progressive effects on the surrounding world. Just as the economic "system of needs" in the economic sphere is a "spectacle of extravagance and misery" which nevertheless produces a *Bildung*, an education of consciousness toward universality, the cyclical negation of entropy by magical girls produces advances in human technology and society
- *The essential contradiction:* "The current standard of living you enjoy was made possible by all those tears shed in the past." An abstract negation of the magical girl system would destroy all human happiness. Yet it is an engine of unimaginable suffering- *The cunning of Reason on display:* It is the internal contradictions of the magical girl system that produce its negation. Girls fall in love with each other; magical girls fall in love with each other. The care that one magical girl has for another, which does not yet rise to the level of Reason (*Vernunft*), produces the potential for a magical girl more powerful than any other. (*The master-slave dialectic, in curious form:* Madoka Kaname is a magical girl who introduces Homura Akemi to the trade. Yet Homura's emotional dependence on Madoka forces her to become the actor, not the acted upon; she *literally* inverts the circumstances of their meeting in order to preserve her as a lover. It is her repetitive labour that transforms her position, yet she remains in an unhappy consciousness, as Kojève would have predicted. She has internalised the dialectic within herself, but is unable to resolve it.)
- Madoka Kaname attains to a *partial* *Vernunft* of the magical girl system and its interaction with the broader world. It is this that allows her to produce a determinate negation of the system: preserving its function, while not destroying it *in toto*.## *Rebellion*
- Yet she only attains *Verstand* when it comes to the *internal* operation of the magical girl system, and her negation is only partial. While creating a new infinity of "hope", she has in real effect only substituted one bad infinity for another. Rather than the negation of despair being accomplished by the magical girls defeating the witches, it is accomplished by Madoka herself preserving the magical girls' souls at the precise moment of breakage. (An astute observer will notice the similarity of this "deal" with that of Faust and Mephistopheles in Goethe's telling, that Faust's soul will be dragged to hell at a moment of bliss which he would wish to prolong eternally; it is in fact an exact inverse of this agreement. That is, while Kyubey is a type of Mephistopheles, Madoka has substituted herself as an "inverse Mephistopheles".)
- Homura spends the great deal of the movie in an "inverted world" of her own - her Labyrinth. The world she constructs reflects nothing more than her initial sense-certainty about the magical world (magical girls as heroes fighting nightmares! so cool!) but her own perception, her sense of *not-rightness*, leads her to an unhappy consciousness
- *Kyubey's plot:* The failure of Madoka's negation can be demonstrated by the fact that Kyubey seeks to observe and thus control it. Madoka has become an abstract universal; abstract universals can be bent. The cunning of Reason reenters the picture as Kyubey inadvertently reveals their plan to Homura, who, naturally, attempts to stop them. Homura is not satisfied with loving Madoka as an abstract universal, "hope"; abstract universals can be manipulated, detached from their "purpose" as such and inverted; Homura's own hope is such that it requires the concrete particular, *Madoka herself*. As such, her hope is the negation of Madoka's negation, and cannot be otherwise.- Homura's means is to turn the entire world into her labyrinth, in the same manner as Madoka did. Her despair itself has undergone a qualitative transformation, into something that she deems "love". Kyubey's remark that they should have never experimented with human emotions is very important here: what Homura deems "love" is something that Kyubey has not seen before. Here the dialectic of lordship and bondage repeats at a grander scale, in more orthodox fashion: Kyubey employs the labour of human emotions to sustain their projects, but it is precisely this dependence that negates Kyubey's control. Homura's "love" is itself a dialectical moment: her desire treats Madoka as Madoka, but negates her otherness; it negates her free will in order to preserve her *caprice*; crucially, *she does surrender herself*, she lets herself be subject to the utmost abjection, but not *to* Madoka, but to *her* Madoka
- That is: just as Madoka's "hope" fails at the last moment due to a *Verstand* that does not pass to full *Vernunft*, so too does Homura's "love" fail at the last moment, for precisely the same reasons

finding out truly wonderful things about chaga mushrooms
Wikipedia article on Inonotus obliquus, section "Common names":

The name chaga comes from the Russian name of the fungus, ча́га, čága, which in turn is borrowed from the word for "mushroom" in Komi, тшак, tšak, the language of the indigenous peoples in the Kama River Basin, west of the Ural Mountains. It is also known as the clinker polypore, cinder conk, black mass and birch canker polypore. In England and officially in Canada, it is known as the sterile conk trunk rot of birch.

luckily this one isn't even Photoshop, it's a sculpture by artist Patricia Piccinini, whose work afaict is largely abt using imagery traditionally associated w/ the grotesque and uncanny to challenge notions of who or what is deserving of affection and interest. here's another of hers:

best thing about this presidency by far is that if you want to find out what the President is saying about anything you have to go to his own personal Twitter knockoff where all the ads look like this like it's still 2005
the sculpture "The Young Family" by Patricia Piccinini, depicting a creature that looks like a hairless human–dog hybrid nursing her young, with the caption "The Most Unusual Creatures Created by Scientists"

Email from [REDACTED] to Jeffrey Epstein on 3 February 2016 at 1:15 pm:

Subject: I beat Bush

Hi Jeffrey,

I got more votes than Jeb Bush got in Iowa, and I only had one congressional district, he had four!! It's so funny (to me – totally embarrassing to him)!!! Still like Trump 😊 and might be a delegate to the republican convention.

Was in St. Thomas for a couple of days – did call this island, but never heard back. Went scuba diving off St. Jeff and it was beautiful. Would be totally funny (to me at least) if you put a big fake shark or statute under the water where the divers go....

Love ya,
