Dear Gill German MP

I have contacted you a couple of times before regarding the EHRC Code of Practice. Those previous emails have been templates and have received cookie-cutter or template responses in return.

I am writing to you now, no templates involved, as one of your many transgender constituents, to ask you to sign EDM 240 which calls for the draft Code of Practice currently before the House to be disapproved. Many of your colleagues in the Labour party signed this motion initially, and many more felt the need to sign after the Select Committee meeting of the 9th of June.

It should be clear to all reasonable people by now that the Supreme Court ruling of April 2025 has not, in fact, brought clarity to the Equality Act 2010. The attempts by the EHRC, egged-on by anti-trans groups like Sex Matters, to turn the EA2010 into a bathroom segregation act only add insult to injury.

It is neither dignified nor respectful to ask transgender people to stop using the toilets that they have used without issue for decades, and to use either the toilet of their birth sex (in many cases this is unsafe - "queer bashing" is still a problem, and visibly trans people like me are obvious targets), or a third space such as an accessible toilet.

As a newly transitioned trans woman, I now have to consider before leaving the house whether my destination will have gender neutral toilets, or if I will be able to get there, do whatever I intend to do, and get home, without needing to go to the toilet. This is a ridiculous situation for anyone to be in in a modern society. An article by the BBC from 2017 on the "urinary leash" (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-41999792) contains this passage: "In the Victorian period, the lack of public facilities for women was intentional as a way of controlling their movements and keeping them out of public spaces...", and it's difficult not to see this new EHRC CoP as doing a similar thing to transgender people.

As I wrote above, transgender people have been using the toilet of their aquired sex for decades now, and there has not been any kind of rise in, or spate of, assaults by transgender people on other toilet users. The requirement to segregate transgender people because a small minority of people find our existence distasteful is highly reminiscent of the segregation of toilets on the basis of skin colour seen in the United States in the earlier part of last century. It was disgraceful then and it just as disgraceful now.

So I once again ask you to sign EDM 240, and if you can not, please explain your reasoning for not doing so.
