I haven't posted anything in a while, so here are some studies.

Art commissioned from the exceptional @zephyxus.bsky.social featuring myself and @gausswolf.bsky.social enjoying his natural habitat: a tiki bar. Oh, also @dravu.bsky.social is there.

This one took far longer than it should have.

I tried to be a bit subtler with lighting on this one. I had a little too much fun rendering the abs, and then suffered through rendering the hands before giving up and just throwing them into shadow.

For @zephyxus.bsky.social, who has provided an enormous wealth of feedback and guidance.

Something different today. I found some bold charcoal portraits by Josh Hernandez and some captivating wildlife art by Craig Werkheiser. Those inspired me to try something a bit messier and traditional-looking.

YCH for the gorgeous @werewolf.gay, whom I selected because I was dreading the braids and metallic jewelry... which meant I needed to practice them.

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies! Thank you all for sharing your lovely characters. I don't know how I'm going to pick from these, but after I finish the piece, I'll DM it to you for approval before posting it. If your character wasn't selected, don't worry; I plan to do more of these.

Practice YCH * Please only post your ref sheet if you want to have your character depicted as shown. * Canines only. Sorry, I'll learn to draw other species some day. Note this is not a raffle. I'll be selecting the character that best fits the scene and allows me to learn the most.

For @dravu.bsky.social, who didn't give me nearly enough shit for dropping him 200 m into a pit of lava with a blowgun. It really was an accident.

For anyone interested, here are the values before I added the local color and painted over.

Tried a different approach to the values, but I'm not thrilled with the outcome. I think I'll go back to finding the terminator lines before attempting to work out the composition, even if I usually have to try multiple light directions.

Yesterday's practice was soft, so I decided today's would be hard. :3

This one took a lot longer to render with the more complex anatomy and soft lighting, but I'm very happy with the result.

Practicing higher-key lighting.

Sorry, this is just a hobby, one I'm still learning. I don't intend to ever take commissions. However, I plan to do free art for people once I get sufficiently good.

4 layers from top to bottom: * Gradient Map adjustment clipped to below * Curve adjustment clipped to below * Value - Hard Light * Local Color I still need a lot painting over that to make it look good, but that gives me colors to work off of and sample from.

I think I've finally honed in on a process for adding color that doesn't require me to guess so much.
