Your daily Anecdata patches are being written from the most remote island in Maine, Monhegan Island!

This meant that if you were doing a Python or R analysis, you would have gotten a dataset that would have included all datasheet rows for all observations that matched that query, instead of only the datasheet rows that matched that query!

Today we've pushed out an update that resolves an issue with data analysis. To summarize, querying a multi-row datasheet where "Debris Type" was equal to "Cigarettes" would have matched all *observations* where Debris Type = Cigarettes, instead of matching all datasheet rows that matched.

Whether you're a project manager looking for a digital home for your project, an existing Anecdata user who'd like to get up to speed with the latest we've got to offer, or if you're simply curious, we'd love to have you there!

Pipelines came about out of necessity; We had a number of PHP-based background tasks we used for data enrichment on our own projects, and since we're moving away from PHP we needed a more performant way of doing the same thing. And so here we are now!

We're rolling out Pipelines on Anecdata! Pipelines are YAML-based workflows you can configure to run on new observations in projects. Pipelines let users perform tasks on data such as reverse or forward geocoding, and fetching data from nearby NOAA weather buoys. www.anecdata.org/pages/pipeli...
A screen with a YAML based workflow that's too long to paste in full but it's titled SeaRise Telemetry Sync.

We've now got Intellisense-like tooltips and code completion in Python. Still working on it in R.
A code editor with the following code:

mport pandas as pd
import numpy as np
import geopandas as gpd
from shapely import wkt
from sklearn.cluster import KMeans
from sklearn.preprocessing import PowerTransformer
from sklearn.metrics import silhouette_score
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.gridspec as gridspec

# 1. SETUP & COLUMNS
pfas_cols = [
    'pfba', 'pfpea', 'pfbs', 'v_42fts', 'pfhxa', 'pfpes', 'hfpoda', 'pfhxs',

The mouse is hovering over pfas_cols with the following tooltip:
Type: builtins.list

Built-in mutable sequence.

If no argument is given, the constructor creates a new empty list. The argument must be an iterable if specified.

The funnest part of building new data analysis tools is that you get to use them yourself! Here's a map we built using Python that correlates underlying base geology in Maine against drinking water samples collected as part of the All About Arsenic project. www.anecdata.org/analysis/mai...
A map of Maine showing the different geologic regions and their corresponding arsenic risk of having arsenic of greater than 10 ug/l in one's well water. The highest risk areas are the Ellsworth and Blue Hill areas, around Augusta, and in the Rockland area.

Guess who just registered to give a talk and present a poster about the exciting R tools we just developed!
Citizen or community science is a relatively new and quickly-growing field, broadly involving the direct participation of laypeople in the collection or analysis of scientific data.

Anecdata.org is a free online citizen science data collection and dissemination platform that anyone can use, developed at the Community Lab at MDI Biological Laboratory. Over the past thirteen years, Anecdata has grown to become a community of over 400 active projects focusing on a wide range of sub-fields of citizen science, from ecology and climate change to astronomy, social research, and the study of urban spaces.

One stumbling block that project managers, data scientists, and members of the public have faced on Anecdata and other citizen science platforms is that the online tools for data analysis have been limited at best. Generating graphics for publications usually requires downloading a dataset, performing offline analysis in R or Julia, and then when graphics needed to be re-done, the data would have to be downloaded again.

To overcome this hurdle and empower citizen scientists across the world, we have created Anecdata DataLab, an online data analysis toolset that directly integrates an online R workspace with a live project dataset. Users can query data, select which R libraries they'd like to include, write R scripts incorporating external files, and generate research-grade graphics. Additionally, any DataLab analysis can be linked to or embedded as a live R visualization online.

We're excited to announce Anecdata DataLab, a built-in data analysis tool that builds on our earlier data analysis work! What does this mean? Any casual data analysis you create is now saveable. We've got an advanced mode where you can create custom R analyses based off live data from Anecdata!

Every saved analysis can be embedded in another website, and when you update that analysis, the embedded analysis will update too. You can define data variables, include external files, and debug your code right on Anecdata.

You can do your data aggregation on the backend and just use R as a frontend for rendering a graphic, or you can get the raw values and do the full data analysis directly in R. We've got ggplot2 and are experimenting with other libraries (your favorite dev is not an R developer by specialization)

Fun experiment: Doing R analyses directly on Anecdata.
A little mini R IDE with controls to define the data axes and a text editor with white on dark blue and some R code for generating a plot

This week, we launched a new data analysis toolset to make it easier for project managers to quickly analyze their live datasets and embed them in other websites. We've created a little showcase of these different analysis tools in our updated help documentation: www.anecdata.org/pages/data-a...
