It's never too late for great music, so here's the Best Of 2025: Hip Hop, R&B, and Reggae. Clipse might have made the biggest noise in these realms, but there was no shortage of invention and passion, much of it from mid-career artists. #bestof2025 anearful.substack.com/p/best-of-20...

Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? (Darkroom/Interscope, 2019) Just two trap and Kurt Weill lovin’ kids cooking up a highly musical and swaggering pop phenomenon. Still sounds fantastic, especially those indelible tunes! #5DeputAlbumsSF4

Tricky - Maxinquaye (Island, 1995) “Bored with the mundane? They label me insane (but I think I’m more normal than most).” That somehow sums up this masterpiece of seamless oddities, so slick and self-assured you almost don’t notice your brain being rearranged. #5DebutAlbumsSF4

The Stone Roses - s/t (Silvertone, 1989) Time’s flattening effect has somewhat dimmed the light they reflected from the 60s, but there are many glories to be heard here, especially those ringing, chiming, churning, and slashing guitars. Apply maximum volume! #5DebutAlbumsSF4

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton (Priority, 1988) A kind of landmark from Public Enemy’s scrappier West Coast counterparts, but CD bloat always has me wondering when it’s going to end. Tighter quality control would’ve helped the best songs stand out. #5DebutAlbumsSF4

Morrissey - Bona Drag (Sire, 1988) Stephen Street is almost as much the star here, constructing rich and varied frames for a moving collection of songs that were never bettered over a long career. Another hero turned jackass, but don’t let him ruin it for you! #5DebutAlbumsSF4

Siouxsie And The Banshees - The Scream (Polydor, 1978) 11 metal postcards from the Bowie-besotted Bromley contingent, each one saying, “Greetings from the future. Wish you were here.” Even The Beatles were dragged into another reality! #5DebutbumsSF4

Bad Company - s/t (Swan Song, 1974) An impressively hit-filled debut from a group of veterans that helped define a certain 70s hard rock ethos. Dry production and a lack of deep feeling, however, keep it from competing in the #5DebutAlbumsSF4 arena. Otherwise, gets the job done!

David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name (Atlantic, 1971) AKA the Laurel Canyon Rolodex album - everybody he called showed up with an instrument and contributed to the glorious skein of guitars and vocal harmonies. At least 30 years ahead of its time! #5DebuteAlbumsSF4

MC5 - Kick Out The Jams (Elektra, 1969) A barbaric yawp from the faction of the counterculture that tried to sonically shatter rifles rather than stick daisies in them. The finale of feedback and incantations makes it clear nothing could stop them but themselves. #5DebutAlbumsSF4
