Systematic theology should only be formed by the building blocks of diligent Bible reading and interpretation. Karl Barth: "Take now my last piece of advice: Exegesis, Exegesis, and once more, Exegesis!" The context for the quote is in my dissertation. dukespace.lib.duke.edu/server/api/c...
Karl Barth, Das Evangelium in der Gegenwart, Theologische Existenz heute vol. 25 (München: C. Kaiser,
1935), 16-17. Busch translation: “The day before [10 February 1935], he had said his formal farewell to his
Bonn pupils at a Bible study group for students at Bad Godesberg. He gave an interpretation of Psalm
119.67 and James 4.6 and ended with the words: ‘We have been studying cheerfully and seriously. As far as
I was concerned it could have continued that way, and I had already resigned myself to having my grave
here by the Rhine! I had plans for the future with other colleagues who are either no longer here or have
been away for a long time--but there has been a frost on our spring night! And now the end has come. So
listen to my last piece of advice: exegesis, exegesis and yet more exegesis! Keep to the Word, to the scripture
that has been given us.’” Busch, Karl Barth: His Life From Letters and Autobiographical Texts, 259. Burnett
translation:
“Dear friends, who have listened to me, the main thing you have heard from me is dogmatics. Dogmatics is
a high and steep art. I do not want to deny that, humanly as well, I strive after it with a certain love and
desire. And I dare say that I have noticed that many of you have been excited about this subject matter as
well. If this now for the moment has come to an end, accept this as a signal for you to temporarily begin
anew your studies at a different place. Take now my last piece of advice: Exegesis, Exegesis, and once more,
Exegesis! If I have become a dogmatician, it is because I long before have endeavored to carry on exegesis.
Let the systematic art, which can also make one mad, rest a little and hold on to the Word, to the Scriptures,
which is given to us and become perhaps less systematic and more biblical theologians. For then the
systematic and dogmatic tasks will certainly be taken care of as well. That is what I wanted to say to you
and in this way I wish to bid you farewell.
I was glad to be among you. I e…

Totally enjoyed David Epstein's book "Inside the Box: How Constraints Make Us Better" (May 2026). Great follow up to "Range", which could suggest doing everything is good. Here Epstein argues that limits fuel creativity.

Finished the 4th Barchester novel "Framley Parsonage" by Anthony Trollope. Fun and insightful as usual. Stanley Hauerwas: "I hope that Barth has read it by now, for what good is heaven if it does not give us time to read all of Trollope's novels?" Dispatches from the Front, 76.

Instead, - co-creating "can we figure this out together?", - coaching "you tried but it's a little off. I didn't set you up for success." - challenging productively. " You seem sure but I don't understand. Can you help me get there?"

Yes. See how I have described individual video assignments below. (1) I'm inviting them not to write out and read their response word-for-word. But I have to grade more leniently with this informal presentation. (2) My prompts ask for quotes or disagreement or application.
Respond:
Individual Video: Record a video under 2 minutes reflecting on the book.

(You can just press record from within the Moodle forum with your computer or with your phone. Or you can record a video on your phone and then upload it. It is okay to have disfluencies like uh, um, restarted sentences. What I mean is that you do not need to write out a script for your presentation and read it or memorize it. Have some notes or points you want to say and then share them with us. I do want the video to be under 2 minutes).

Richard Baxter in 1656 said a 30-60 minute walk before dinner was sufficient exercise for most people. "An hour, or half an hour’s walk before meat, is as much recreation as is necessary for the health of most of the weaker sort of students" (The Reformed Pastor).

For a pastor, "The furniture of their house is very plain, but clean, whole and sweet ... for they have no money for such things." - George Herbert, A Priest to the Temple, Chapter 10, 1633. Dallas Willard said his furniture style was "early attic or late basement."

It's good to want to be a pastor and ... "Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach" (1 Timothy 3:1-2). Gregory the Great in 590 comments "while praising the desire ... the Apostle enumerates the necessary virtues."

A huge issue for Teresa of Avila in 1566 was the Spanish Inquisition Roman Catholic hierarchy not wanting a woman to pray unscripted prayers let alone write books. Some priests advocated for her while others tried to ban her. The original books before censorship are interesting!

I used to just not teach "emotional intelligence." I really need to start warning my students away from using it proactively because it is so pervasive. Wisdom or love can't be measured accurately and needs a moral framework. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
"A radical, but not inaccurate, appraisal of the field would be that there is no evidence for the validity of Emotional Intelligence and there never will be because there is no such thing as EI."

In the last 40 years, women have dieted and worried about being overweight. But in the last five years, I've seen teenage boys too being worried about their abs. Now I have seen men in their 80's being proud of losing weight! BUT in all these cases *strength* is more important!

For most people, your 40's are a time when time with children plummets (as they reach high school) and time alone skyrockets. It is understandable that one question is whether you will do more physical activity with some of that time alone or get a hobby or read more or write more.

Politics isn’t witchcraft. Politics is made by people, people with their influences, their experiences, vanities, weaknesses, strengths, desires, dreams, convictions, values, and interests. People who need to fight for majorities in a democracy if they want to make things happen. We can do this—Wir schaffen das. Throughout the whole of my political career, no phrase has been thrown back at me with quite such virulence as this one. No phrase has been so polarizing. For me, however, it was quite an ordinary phrase. It expressed an attitude. Call it trust in God, caution, or simply a determination to solve problems, to deal with setbacks, get over the lows and come up with new ideas. “We can do this, and if something stands in our way it has to be overcome, it has to be worked on.” That was how I put it in my summer press conference on August 31, 2015. That was how I did politics. It’s how I live. It’s also how this book came about. With this attitude, which is also something learned, everything is possible, because it isn’t only politics that contributes to it—every individual person has a part to play. The 7 rules are:
1) Get out of your own way.
2) Break the rules.
3) Show up in powerful fashion.
4) Create a powerful brand.
5) Network relentlessly.
6) Use your power.
7) Understand that once you have acquired power, what you did to get it will be forgiven, forgotten, or both.

David Bentley Hart says there are advantages of not loving religion but still being a Christian. It's not a crutch or something you get high on. You practice it because you think it's true and good. And you don't mind it being reformed and whittled down when it overreaches.
