A specification is fundamentally a lossy compression of somebody’s mental model. Humans fill in the missing pieces using experience, taste, and common sense. But agents are fundamentally nincompoops. We need a different language or set of primitives to get better alignment with the machines.

Iterative development became the default way to build software for good reasons. Writing s…

Sometimes I get LLMs to create detailed specs from my fleeting ideas, just so that I have something to read before bed.

What do you mean by truly collaborative? For example, is a coding agent in an IDE not a collaborative human + agent editing experience?

I agree on the style, but I think the content they produce is tighter than ever.

A cool side-effect of coding with llms is that you don't get so attached to the code, so pivoting is easy (mentally). I imagine it would remove a huge source of friction for teams.

One thing I've recently noticed is that when vibe coding, I'm much more creative. My mind is freed from the coding detail and logical issues to think more holistically about the system. I've built much better architectures and systems because of it.

Im seeing my best results from the following strategy: - burn all your frontier model credits building out a spec that breaks it down into independently verifiable tasks - get your base model to just hammer away until completion - wait until you get more credits, then repeat.

I'm ready to say that LLMs/agents enable me to build systems that used to be far out of my normal ability. They're not just junior coder level any more - those days are gone.

Went a bit nuts this afternoon and built an agent runtime.

Do you actually engage on this platform, or is it just to increase the blast radius of your x profile?

GPT-5.4 is a great coder, but a terrible engineer. Just defaults to complexity every time.

If you're trying to save money on Claude/Cursor/etc. do you: 1. Get the best models to do the planning, then the cheap models to do the grunt work, or 2. The other way around.
010
AndyJessop @andyjessop.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
I honestly believe that model capability has crossed a threshold over the last few months, and the bottleneck is now the humans orchestrating the bots. The focus now needs to be on generating structured product requirements and feeding them to agents.

AndyJessop @andyjessop.bsky.social · 25/03/2026
Oh that's interesting. I generally prefer Opus for planning, then the smaller models for execution. I haven't evaluated it formally, but the idea is that the better models are required for the architecture and then the smaller models to the iterative stuff where they're fixing lint errors, etc.

Claude Code with Opus 4.6 is eye-wateringly expensive. I just blew my kids' university budget in about 30 minutes.

I'm also wondering what the big deal is when you can get your favourite coding agent to knock out any specific functionality you want in just a few minutes. Platforms feel outdated.

Agree that it's very useful. I find myself implementing it occasionally too! e.g. here github.com/andyjessop/p...

Out of interest, why would this need to be baked into Node/browser APIs when it could just be a library? The actual implementation is fairly straightforward.

Spec-driven development gives me better code than when I write the code manually. By starting from the spec each time, I'm forced to think architecturally from the beginning, and edge-cases are handled from the outset. I'm writing less and less code, but actually enjoying the process more.

Also, I've defaulted to Mistral initially as it's a good privacy option, but will be moving towards a hybrid model based heavily on Ollama, but with smaller models so that it can be run on small machines. Hosted LLMs will be used, but sparingly, and possibly with some obfuscation.

I'm building a privacy focussed AI stack for family use. It's based on Open WebUI - which is ludicrously cool - and will use postgres with pgvector for memories. Not much more than a skeleton at the moment: github.com/andyjessop/p...

I feel like the general point still stands. If a machine gives you a higher level of abstraction, it will likely make the old way obsolete.
120
AndyJessop @andyjessop.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
But we do have machines that churn out textiles? People don't weave cotton by hand.
200
AndyJessop @andyjessop.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
I believe it depends on how good the LLM is (or how good it gets). If it genuinely provides a new layer of abstraction, then there may be no need to ever touch code again. We all just become system designers. I'm sure hole punchers also felt attachment to their craft.

A bash script launched as a service measures the battery level and reports it to mqtt. I have an automation in node-red (oh, I forgot I also installed node-red) that will listen to the battery status and turn off the plug if it gets over 50%, and turn on again when it gets under 40%.

I think I've created the homelab version of a "useless machine". I got an old laptop, booted with proxmox, installed mosquitto, telegraf, grafana, and zigbee2mqtt, got myself a smart plug, and now I can automatically manage the battery level of the same laptop so that the battery lasts.
