Stat. tests narrow the curriculum whilst giving educators & young people no helpful info. Introducing yet another is therefore counter productive. If Gov are serious about improving reading then schools need proper funding & the decoupling of test scores from conclusions about school 'effectiveness'

The exam obsession Milburn has highlighted holds young people back. Assessment methods in England must be broadened in order to support them to develop the knowledge and skills which are actually relevant for the world they will enter

So many issues well identified through this Review: "the limited range of assessment approaches in KS4 in England means that some students are effectively set up to fail... That is not because they lack ability. It is because the system defines ability in ways that exclude them"

Another motion has been adopted at #NEU2025, this time on maintained nursery schools. Delegates agreed these vital settings must be saved, so they can continue to support pre-school children to get the best start in their life and education,

Another thing it would not be accurate to suggest is that teacher assessment - via CAGs and TAGs in the pandemic - is/was worse for disadv. students. Ofqual analysis of results makes this clear 1/6

This is the evidence & data on this issue. If you are evidence & data led then these findings will be helpful for forming accurate conclusions. All modes of assessment have strengths & weaknesses - but you can't conclude exams are unilaterally 'better' for disadv. students 6/6

"the few changes noted... could be understood as the impact of the pandemic on students’ education and the impact of the change in assessment arrangements. The 2 sources of impact are impossible to disentangle." 5/6 www.gov.uk/government/p...

2021: At A-Level - no change in gap between FSM and non-FSM. At GCSE - potentially small decrease in outcomes for FSM students however not attributable to mode of assessment 4/6

In fact, it suggests 2020 outcomes may've been better for disadv. students "those candidates attending centres in areas with the highest deprivation indices received relatively higher grades than previously in 2020, closing the gap with candidates from less deprived areas" 3/6

2020: "although teacher grades were moderately higher than previous years’ grades, they did not introduce any substantial bias or different patterns of grading [than previous years]" 2/6 assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6107c8...

The QA process in 2021 is not a model teachers would want to see repeated - it was high-workload and low-support. However even in a worst case scenario, its clear teachers can grade their students with high levels of accuracy 2/2

With the CAR Interim Report due soon, a Monday reminder not to let anyone tell you teacher assessment (TA) is less accurate or valid than other methods. The only yr with QA and TA (2021) saw just 2% of centres asked to revisit grades & just 195 out of 5.7m grades changed 1/2 gov.uk/government/p...

“OK, we’ve heard you, inspections are too blunt & high stakes. To reduce the stakes we’ll increase 4 cats. to 5, increase the judgement areas from 4 to 11 & increase monitoring if you’re in difficult circumstances” 🤦‍♂️ Worse than not fit for purpose, a danger to educator health

The Government has proposed an unfunded, 2.8% pay increase for teachers next year. Instead of continuing Conservative austerity, the Government must fully fund the above-inflation pay increases desperately needed to value, recruit and retain teachers and school leaders. neu.org.uk/latest/press...

We are putting the Government on notice. 2.8% unfunded won’t do.
