andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Depends if you find the process of trying to improve it with AI to be fun, I guess. It's certainly more of a challenge than just slop-porting the SMS version across. 010
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 12/10/2026This is one of the reasons AI is good at it. It doesn't get bored and sees no issue with running through thousands of minor variations to produce an optimal result. 100
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 12/10/2026It's almost certainly possible to some degree. There are already a few Spectrum games that have been sped up in this fashion. I'm not saying it's easy, but you could definitely guide an AI to do this kind of work. 120
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yeah, you really really don't want to be drinking microscopic shards of glass. Quite aside from the potential internal damage it'll cause, it'll ruin the taste of the wine. 010
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Yeah, that's sadly what I suspect we will see. 000
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Assuming you're using a teapot it makes no real difference. If you're using a teabag in a cup though it will ruin the tea, since it only brews properly with boiling hot water. 010

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Working from the office is increasing our anxiety and means that companies don't have to bother with the mental health of their workers. andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Hmm, I don't see it myself, although both are great games. I've always seen Resident Evil as the spiritual successor to the Dizzy games (it basically plays the same but with Zombies) 001
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Use by dates should not be ignored. Best before dates, on the other hand, are generally ok to ignore although it may not taste as good as it should have. 2240

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Sure. Many of them are free, so (personally) I'd be less concerned if nobody is making money although I can certainly understand that others might disagree. But commercial efforts should definitely seek and compensate the original rights holders. 010
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Exactly. As long as the original author is ok, then I don't see an issue. And if the changes are substantial, then label it as a remake etc. I think most people would just accept that a modern port may play slightly differently anyway. 110
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 22/08/2026I don't really see the problem with updating it if it makes sense to do so. Plenty of re-releases add QoL features or enhancements etc. It's not like the original goes away if people want that. 100

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Nice. The Spectrum made it a lot easier because you could CLEAR memory to reserve an appropriate sized block for machine code routines. You could also directly LOAD CODE blocks (although a devious trick was to SAVE the entirety of RAM and the LOAD Basic + M/C in on go) 110
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 29/06/2026As much as it saddens me to say, I think you're probably right. It's long past it's prime and probably better left as a memory. 010
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 24/06/2026Was that the XOR one? It seemed bonkers that Commodore had issues shipping CD32s because of that, given that the Amiga blitter used minterms rather than actual XOR operations. 110
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 20/06/2026It can be interesting, especially in code bases that have had multiple authors over the years. But everyone has their style and you sometimes can tell who wrote what by the subtle hints in layout or approach. You can see where they went down a rabbit hole and just fudged the implementation. 010
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 19/06/2026Haha, yes having spent a lot of my career reverse engineering systems I entirely understand. Still think people will be interested as historical artifacts though. And AI can help those who want to understand it. 110
andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 19/06/2026Great article and, FWIW, I'm sure plenty of people would be fascinated by your source if you could share it. Even if we're now all spoilt with fancy debugging tools that can show exactly what was going on inside games like this! 120

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 07/06/2026This is one of those somewhat retro-active history things. In reality Amstrad chose the 3" drive because the drive mechanisms were a *lot* cheaper. And until the very late 80s the cost of disks wasn't all that different. 3.5" only won because IBM picked it and PC costs high enough to hide the cost. 0121

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 30/04/2026Yeah, an incredibly laborious process. Followed usually by it failing and hours spent trying to work out if the code was wrong, the hand assembly was wrong or the typing in was wrong.... 010

andycadley.bsky.social @andycadley.bsky.social · 05/03/2026It always struck me as an odd pick of pack in game: you've built a console specifically enhanced for 2D sprite based games, so show it off with a 3D racer that can't really take advantage of the hardware.
