Trying to limit news-posting here. Also I present as an average Gen X bloke, so in case you've surfed in or seen my book, here is the regular reminder of where I stand on things.

A cute, pink backdrop with a lovely rabbit, and text over that says: Don't let anyone say fascist shit.

[100+ people have said this elsewhere before me] Lanterns is a great, intelligent show that has been released in a time of horrific media illiteracy, shredded attention and bad faith take-havers.

The Anthropic IPO is further evidence that capitalism has become the boogeyman version of 'Communism' that it warned against in the cold war. A tiny elite at the top centrally planning everything regardless of if it's profitable or practical, with a huge bureaucracy padding it just below.

Still stoked that our band's flyers and music was featured at Daisy Chain Fields as part of the Grrrl Germs exhibition on the global Riot Grrrl movement. Here's Casey in front of one of our flyers, which she also created with Ceridwen.

It's possible to really love a book or an author's work and also not have to be in a fan group about it or engage in parasocial behavior. FYI

Best dream this year so far, no notes.

post by Andy Best (me): had a weird dream I was hanging with Mia Goth in Shanghai, she was dressed in black and lay down in the shallow water of a dank mall fountain with stained tiles so I took a picture and we called it 'O-pee-lia' after the Millais painting, then texted it to Scorsese.

Everyone's gangsta about corporations destroying artists until you ask them if they use Spotify, everyone's gangsta about consumerism until you ask them if they give ratings to art.

When Insta first came out, I mocked it like, everyone is a photographer now, and they've all chosen the aesthetic of a product catalogue or consumerist brand manager. Now I yearn for a time when people were interested in making a photo gallery.

Cycling in Shanghai. The tree of flowers sculpture in Hongqiao, under the moon. The photo is possible because there's a huge floodlight out of frame to the left, as this is by a major intersection. No filter, stopped and snapped as I was riding by, manual light settings.

A huge tree made of ceramic flowers, with the moon in the night sky above.

There's going to be a lot more pics from cycling around the city on my feed, the summer heat has abated and it's that time again, to get some weight off and keep my health from sliding too much. Not a humble brag type thing, as an asthmatic you have to get on top of it when you can.

UK 80s: our very religious dep. head explained 'race' to us one assembly by saying God created a big lake that turned you white, and the water got progressively used up as everyone bathed in it. This was tame for a time when all school was tied up in relgion

Night cycling in Shanghai, down by the river.

The entrance to a pedestrian and bike on the underside of a bridge. Night lights give the passage a lilac glow.

A riverside monument by the river, covered top to bottom in lights, extremely phallic also.

Lanterns is really good. There's not any adaptation issues, it's like the comics: bring in an artist and writer and they do a run in their style.

Cycling in Shanghai same spot 12 years apart. What I notice is not time or aging but how today's phone cameras, with insane wide angles, dual lenses and auto-correction, create hyperreal images.

I stand on a bridge over the Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, the sun is setting, residential towers line the water. the photo was taken in 2014.

My bike on a pedestrian and boke bridge over the Suzhou Creek, residential towers line one side of the water, this was taken just now, in 2026. The bridge has been rebuilt recently.

Me on a bridge over the Suzhou Creek in 2026, taken with my phone selfie style, ugh, lol, older grumpier and cycling on a rainy day.

I like Slow Horses, but also the funeral scene might be the first time in its run where it had actually something to say: A selection of players of the 'great game', bored, in contempt, or otherwise indifferent to the people and culture they claim to be protecting. Intentional? No idea.

The funny thing about this song at the time - the best of the alt-rock/pop crossovers - was that majors were falling over each other to cash in but then all melted down over this video, which was heavily censored or banned across multiple countries.
