Despite a chilly turn in the weather, a wonderfully warm and determined @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social picket today. No to drastic cuts; no to compulsory redundancies! Proud to stand with a great bunch of colleagues, including over 25 from the School of Law today. 💪

An interesting side note in ICTY transcripts. In response to a prompt from a judge, Slobodan Praljak *claims* that Cardinal Stepinac died as a result of poisoning and with a clear conscience in relation to his acts under the WWII Ustaša government in Croatia. (1/5)
Transcript text (line numbers excluded)
JUDGE ANTONETTI: [Interpretation] Just a minute. General Praljak, the Prosecutor has emphasised the issue of religion, the influence that the Catholic Church exercised, and we can see in the list, at page 18 in the English version, the role of someone called Alojzije Stepinac. As you are well aware, he was a cardinal in Zagreb, he was declared a martyr by the Pope, but in 1946 the Yugoslav authorities convicted him for having collaborated with the Ustasha. This is a well-known public fact. So having referred to him in a document intended for use by soldiers who, a priori, have no particular confession, even if most of them were Catholic, well, the fact that this
[Page Break: Page 43668]
was done, doesn't it mean that a signal is being given? Why is this reference made to the cardinal?Transcript text (line numbers excluded)
THE WITNESS: [Interpretation] For his moral position, Judge Antonetti. Naturally, I know about the work and the life of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, I know a lot about that. His stance in the course of the Second World War, his stance after the Second World War, his stance at trial -- well, later he was poisoned in prison, and he died as a result of this poisoning, but his guardian in prison, the guardian of all those prisons at the time the cardinal was there, well, it was Mr. Manolic, who has testified here. So he was beatified. And because of his moral position expressed in court in relation to all other counts, and he stated that his conscience was clear, and I'll repeat this before this Court, although naturally I can't compare myself with the cardinal, well, because of this position this is the reason for which we -- or, rather, I wanted to make a reference to this moral position. And under item 7, it says you have to be dedicated... (extract ends)

Cathartic storytelling: The use of letter-writing in a study on prisoner isolation in Scotland
Deborah Russo
Abstract
The aim of this article is to demonstrate the strengths of letter-writing as a qualitative method of inquiry in prison research. It aims to do so by drawing on the author’s research on experiences of isolation in Scottish prisons, carried out through letter exchanges with prisoners over the course of over a year. The positive elements of letter-writing were significant not solely from a researcher prospective, but also from that of correspondents. Through a process of catharsis and storytelling, participants were able to reflect on and recount stories of their trauma in isolation. However, a number of emotional and ethical challenges were encountered in the process, which researchers need to be mindful of prior to embarking on correspondence-based prison research.

The paper is based on interviews with over 300 prisoners in Ukrainian prisons who came under Russian authority due to occupation. It does important work in developing a concept of carceral warfare - the reconfiguration of detention for military purposes.
Abstract
This article examines how civilian detention was weaponized during Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territories after the 2022 invasion. It focuses civilian prisoners—detained or incarcerated under Ukrainian law for non-combat-related offences—who became subject to Russian control when prisons were seized, repurposed and, in some cases, integrated into the Russian penal system. Drawing on over 300 testimonies from five occupied facilities, the article documents patterned abuses including torture, forced labour, coerced naturalization and ideological indoctrination, alongside the military use of prison infrastructure. It advances the concept of carceral warfare to capture how prisons operate as spaces where legal authority, coercion and violence are reconfigured for military ends, erasing the distinction between penal governance and war-making. By centring prisons as arenas of wartime governance, the article contributes to scholarship on penal sovereignty and occupation regimes, while highlighting the need for stronger legal protections for prison populations during armed conflict.
