But I’d argue academia has the issue of falsifying data / experiments to deal with first. There won’t be a watermark if a foreign student uses AI to rewrite a concluding sentence into more easily understood language, for example. 110

But if there’s 30,000 entries and 500 get flagged as 95-100% AI, those just get read with a cursory glance. The goal is not to be perfect, just to really try to get that time back.
