Fascinating. I’m interested (as an aussie) because I research water systems from an arts perspective, but also recently cancelled a long planned Danube/Rhine holiday cruise. Is travel time a universal river system measure ? It’s a number an arts audience could relate to in a visualisation.

'Power is its own constituency. It exists to protect itself.' Authoritarianism sounds scary, but it arrives bit by bit. We're already doing the work for some grim future. Will be talking about this and more at Sydney Opera House's Curious program this Sunday. www.crikey.com.au/2026/09/28/r...

Don't think Australia is immune to authoritarianism
Nobody wakes up to sudden authoritarianism. We relinquish ourselves to it by allowing our favoured government to get away with bending norms and rules. Over time, these bends become clean breaks.

Thanks Ben, well said. Plenty of flaws in the IPCC process but the the non-neutral ‘blame the scientists’ narrative is just wrong.

Why does the mention of Aborigines make some people angry?

The costs of this summer's extreme weather are expected to wipe out the EU's economic growth for all of 2026. "The biggest drag is expected to come from people struggling to work in extreme heat." Agricultural output could fall by between 3 and 7 percent. #ClimateChange
And the summer is not over. France and Britain are bracing for their fifth heat wave of the season this week, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in southeastern France and 36 C (97 F) forecast in

Great analysis. The myth of political 'polarisation'. "... the central dynamics are not about shifting opinions. They are about identities hardening. Loyalty to a leader. A sense of threat. A division between "the real people" and the enemies said to threaten them." #auspol
