If you instinctually treat everything said by “next big thing” salesmen as marketing fluff, not just disregarding it but believing the opposite, you’ll have been right more often than not in my lifetime.

The first time a man in the US was charged with rape of his cohabitating wife was in 1978. The *first time* that charge had been brought. His lawyer argued “maybe this is the risk of being married, you know?” Anyone want to guess the verdict?

This is some Sorkin-assed “Barlett didn’t actually commute this person’s death sentence but he strongly considered it before deciding to do nothing and isn’t that really the sign of the stronger moral character” bullshit.

“How Biden almost did something about Gaza” is an embarrassing story to report on for everyone involved.

I ran into a paper claiming data centers ackshually drive down the cost of electricity because having consistent demand (hypothetically) allows energy companies to improve efficiency and increase energy supply. Methodological issues aside, crypto shits said the same thing.

Say what you want about John Yoo, he’s a consistent advocate for brutally violating the rights of prisoners. Note: what you want to say is “oh, that piece of irredeemable shit”

Why do you consider “rest in piss” to be ban-worthily toxic, while considering notorious bigots somehow non-toxic?

The first and biggest tip I’d have is to identify for yourself whether your goal is “save this person’s soul” or shut them up. God help me I’m about to give Ronson his due, you can’t do both. And setting your goal as saving someone’s soul should be a rare privilege.

The number of “look at his voting record, he’s definitely an ally of trans people” I’ve gotten is wild. When his record is “voted for an amendment to ‘only’ allow discrimination at a local level” and “voted for an amendment to ban gender affirming healthcare but ‘only’ for trans kids”h

If the top songs in the summer of an election gave any insight into what “mainstream US voters” want, the year in which Sabrina Carpenter was two of the top ten songs shouldn’t have been one that reelected Trump.

One of the reasons I hate the “super genius who doesn’t have time for social conventions” archetype is that I recognize it’s a power fantasy for guys exactly like who I was when I was the shittiest person I’ve ever been.

Seeing someone lose their shit in print because of the grave insult to the “working class” (by which she means rural whites) does make me feel a bit cooler having never heard it. Like… if this is who’s mad about it, and they’re this mad? Apparently I inadvertently kick ass.

Going back to 2016 I’ve only ever heard two “songs of the summer” (based on Billboard) and I couldn’t guarantee either was the year it was released. Weirdly I don’t remember anyone crashing out in Rolling Stone about me not having heard Rockstar by DaBaby.

They’re claiming it’s to “help men who are scared of women start liking women” Just… no. These dudes like women, they just don’t like needing to consider women fully autonomous people with their own preferences and desires. Hence being the same dudes who desperately want sex bots.

His answer is basically “Ken Paxton is trying to paint me as a crazy person who totally opposes discriminating against trans kids. He’s ignoring that I’m totally fine with discrimination if it’s done at the local level.” Good god

If I were a more conspiracy-minded person I’d probably point out that in June OpenAI filed its notice for its IPO. Despite their CFO indicating their bookkeeping “isn’t yet ready to meet the rigorous reporting standards required of public companies”

The problem is how we’re defining “sees the light.” We’re going to see a lot of Trump voters saying what amounts to “I still believe in the platform of the NSDAP but I now realize that Hitler guy, and only that Hitler guy, was bad.”

There will come a day that old guard Dems realize that there is no amount of conciliatory kowtowing they can do that will make Republican politicians or voters think “wow, we really should be less shitty and spiteful.” In the right-wing view, that restraint simply reaffirms that they’re correct.

Your profile features a quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt saying "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent." You do know that wasn't meant as like... a challenge to try to make people feel inferior, right?

Ah, that's the trick of it. "The white working-class" as an imagined entity must be kowtowed to. The actual voters are to be ignored It's why discussion of "the" white working-class is always about rural blue-collar jobs and not retail and service-workers who make up most of the actual demographic

This isn't *quite* as absurdly pathetic as Ryan Grim repeating claims about Platner's wife being Jewish which came from a VDare ghoul. But it *is* pretty pathetic. I know you're disappointed that the Nazi-tattooed private school kid who doesn't understand consent dropped out.

I don't know Troy Jackson from Adam, which makes sense since I'm not from Maine. But saying the majority leader in Maine's state senate is "from nowhere" sounds a lot more like sour grapes than anything else.

Based on my limited understanding of sea law, it might not be due to where it happened. AFAIK international law regarding piracy only kicks in under international waters. I’d bet lots of countries treat crimes done in their territorial waters the same as on land and don’t have a “piracy” law.

This is your periodic reminder that the 25th amendment isn't a quick-and-dirty removal mechanism for "the president is out of his mind." Maybe we should have something like that (other than impeachment) but that's not what the 25th does. It basically only works while a president is in a coma.

I'm pretty sure the only way they could have made "we gave this billionaire asshole a special privileged showing of something that we've told the public can only be viewed for a limited number of total hours by anyone" worse was by adding "and we did it for free as a gift."
When asked what the museum might have got in return, Osborne said: “The short answer is he hasn’t offered any money, and were he to offer money, the board would consider it and have to take into account the pros, you know, receiving more income, and the reputational risks.”

The problem with the ongoing reporting of chatbot "fears" is that the presumption the reporting and "whistleblowing" is reliable is based on the reasoning we'd use for a normal evil corporation. Tech writers still don't get that "our chatbot is so advanced it's dangerous" is a *sales pitch*.

I’m not a believer in the whole “hard times make strong men, who make good times, which make hard times” bullshit. But I do wonder how much of this is that being able to cure or prevent disease led a lot of people to think disease was never a big deal in the first place.

Taken to the extreme of its illogic, wouldn’t this justify never counting any ballots after the first? After all, the second ballot has a significant chance to radically flip the “apparent outcome” of one candidate already having 100% of the vote.

Call me crazy, but if a game absolutely must have quick time events the compromise of “do it if you want it to go faster, but if you want this to be like a cinematic you can just wait” is a good compromise.

If I were a betting man, I’d wager that normal people don’t really distinguish “inflation” from “high prices.” Especially when (a) wages have not kept pace, and (b) people are watching a speedrun of rich assholes making bank investing in a bubble they hope is too big to fail.

If it were me, I’d think the biggest part of the work is an accurate *definition* of “toxic”. Since otherwise it’d be really easy to instill one’s scoring rubric with preexisting views like “insulting someone for being a bigot is equally toxic to being a bigot.”

One of the biggest victories of the right-wing in the modern era has to be the proliferation of the idea that “paying for things you want” is “loss.”

It’s fascinating how many people wound up drinking all the right-wing kool-aid they could find based entirely on “if the left doesn’t like my very smart and cool bigotry they must be dumb and uncool and therefore wrong about everything.” Instead of like… reexamining their bigotry.
