It’s my sister and brother-in-law’s ruby wedding anniversary, so here’s us exactly 40 years ago today. Happy Anniversary Allison and Daren. 💒 🥂

Cragside is amazing - built by Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong, it was the very first house in the world powered and lit by hydroelectricity. Nestled among dramatic rocky hills and huge pine woods, containing all sorts of clever Victorian gadgetry. I could spend days here!

Quick stop in Thirsk for a proper fan-boy moment at 23 Kirkgate: the real Skeldale House! Visiting Alf Wight’s actual surgery (aka James Herriot), seeing where All Creatures Great and Small came to life. Darrowby in real life! 🐾🩺

Thornton-le-Dale delivers the best of both worlds: picture-postcard 17th-century thatched cottages by the beck for me, and a pilgrimage to Mathewsons garage from Bangers & Cash for the husband!

Commissioned in 1699 by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle and famously designed by playwright John Vanbrugh, Castle Howard took over 100 years to finish. Home to the Howard family for over 300 years… and forever famous as Brideshead!

High Force drops 21m over 300-million-year-old volcanic rock into the Tees gorge, and sits right on the Pennine Way. Glad I packed the walking boots; I’ll leave the wearing of sling backs to publicise mental health strictly to Kitty.

Raby Castle - built by the Neville family (and served as the planning hub for the 1569 Rising of the North against Elizabeth I). Today, home of the Vane family (the Barons Barnard) for over 390 years, surrounded by a massive 200-acre deer park with red and fallow deer roaming right up to the moat.

Brimham Rocks. Wind and ice have been shaping these massive gritstone rocks for over 300 million years (way before the dinosaurs), and now they just balance in Nidderdale like giant natural sculptures.

Studley Royal was the vision of disgraced politician John Aislabie. Shunned in London, he turned the Skell Valley into an engineered landscape of formal moon ponds, classical follies, and the famous 'Surprise View' of the abbey he eventually purchased to complete his composition.

From its humble start by 13 monks seeking solitude in 1132, Fountains Abbey grew into one of Britain’s wealthiest Cistercian monasteries before its fall in 1539. Walking these huge, surviving stone arches, you feel the weight of nearly 900 years of piety, power, and dissolution.

Built in a French chateau-style by John & Joséphine Bowes to bring world-class art to all, The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle houses fine and decorative treasures. It’s home to the Silver Swan, a 1773 clockwork automaton which is BEAUTIFUL; amazing that it predates even the USA! 🦢

Escomb Saxon Church: one of the oldest and most complete Anglo-Saxon churches in the United Kingdom. Built around 670-675 AD, with heavy masonry salvaged from the nearby Roman cavalry fort at Binchester.

Really enjoyed The Cut Throat Trial by The Secret Barrister/S.J. Fleet. Brilliant courtroom drama told from every angle: judge, barristers, and defendants. Authentic, darkly funny, and full of twists that make you feel like you’re on the jury. A cracking fiction debut. 📚⚖️

Had to go to the vets today. My paw is sore and split open, and the vet thinks there may be a grass seed in it. He couldn’t find it, so I’ve got antibiotics and painkillers and have to go back in a week. I was very brave. 🐾 Apparently I’m not allowed walkies… I strongly object.

Six years without you, Nan. I don’t really like this day, if I’m honest. You’ve been on my mind a lot lately, and today I had tea and cake at one of your favourite tearooms. It made me think of you, and smile. I miss you. What I wouldn't give for just one more cuddle. ❤️

John of John by Douglas Stuart: bleak, beautiful, frustrating and deeply human. The claustrophobic island setting, family secrets, faith and repression all got under my skin. Characters I cared about far too much. Emotionally battered. 😭 5 stars.

I never met Dolly Parton, and yet somehow it feels like we’ve lost someone we all knew. What a woman! Talented, generous, funny and seemingly incapable of making the world anything other than a little brighter. And heaven has just gained a LOT more sparkle. ✨ Rest easy, Dolly

Flesh. I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Cold, bleak and deliberately detached. Sparse writing and lack of introspection can be frustrating, but I kept wanting to know what happened next. Uncomfortable in places and certainly not uplifting, but undeniably unusual and thought-provoking.

Call the Met Office. Actual water fell from the sky in Norfolk. 🌧️ Sure, it didn't last long. Am I still counting it as a full garden watering session so I don't have to drag the watering can about? You bet I am! 🪣💧

Watching The Captive Heart (1946). My grandad, Lance Cpl Richard May (1/7th Middlesex, 51st Highland Div), was a Bren Gun Carrier driver. Ealing Studios used real troops as extras in post-war Germany, and he’s in it… just spotted him wearing a bandage in the opening scene! 🎬

London Falling by Patrick Radden Keefe is a fascinating, unsettling look at a side of London most of us rarely see. Exceptionally well researched and often gripping, although it meanders at times and never quite resolves the central mystery. Still, a memorable read.
